Nicola Coughlan was at rock bottom when she turned thirty. She worked part-time in an optician's shop in Galway and lived with her parents because she couldn't afford rent in London. There were no spotlights or red carpets in sight during that 2017.
The Irish actress spent almost a decade going from one failed audition to another, taking precarious jobs along the way. But her training at the Oxford School of Drama helped her stay disciplined in the toughest moments. Before giving up, she decided to audition for a small series about teenagers in Northern Ireland.
And the phone finally rang.
In 2018, Derry Girls premiered on Channel 4 and Coughlan's life took a dramatic turn. She played Clare Devlin, a nervous, perfectionist student caught up in the political conflict of the 1990s. The comedy was such a huge hit that Netflix bought the international distribution rights shortly afterward.
The British industry knew it had a gold mine on its hands. In 2020, Bridgerton premiered and the actress took on the role of Penelope Featherington. Her character carried the narrative weight of being the hidden identity behind Lady Whistledown. The first season reached 82 million views in just one month.
Coughlan handled her sudden fame with a down-to-earth approach on social media. But she always kept a careful distance from the London tabloids. In 2022, she filmed the second season of the series while also taking part in BBC radio drama projects.
The corset was not enough for her.
During 2023 she filmed a brief cameo as a diplomatic Barbie in the film Barbie by Greta Gerwig. It was a smart move to break into the American market without abandoning her European roots. The production grossed more than $1,400 million at the global box office.
In 2024, she took on the lead role in the third season of Bridgerton. The storyline centered on her romance with the character Colin Bridgerton, which once again sent the audience numbers soaring. But the actress was already thinking about moving away from period drama.
That same year, she premiered Big Mood, a six-episode series about friendship and mental health. She worked alongside Lydia West on a storyline that mixed sharp humor with situations of raw honesty. Critics praised her ability to carry close-ups without the need for supporting dialogue.
The bet on risk paid off.
In 2024, she also took part in the historical comedy Seize Them!, playing a humble worker in medieval Britain. Filming for her new projects for 2025 has been locked down with strict confidentiality clauses. The production cost of her latest television work is around seven million euros per episode.
