Nicole Sorace was born in 2008 in a small town in Calabria, and her first contact with acting had nothing to do with the glamour of red carpets. She started out as an advertising model, but her photogenic look hid a dramatic instinct that casting directors spotted right away. In 2023, she got the chance to join The Good Mothers, a Disney+ production that moved away from romantic stories to explore the brutality of the 'Ndrangheta.
Playing Vittoria Cacciola was a considerable technical challenge for a teenager with no prior training. The series won the top prize in the Berlinale Series section at the Berlin International Film Festival and put Sorace's name on the radar of major European studios. She had to shoot scenes of suffocating emotional weight under the direction of Julian Jarrold and Elisa Amoruso.
And the Italian industry took notice.
Before filming, the actress spent months working on her accent and the physical restraint needed to survive a crime drama. International critics praised her ability to hold the frame alongside veteran actors without overacting. The real explosion in her popularity came a year later through a global streaming platform.
In 2024, The Tearsmith, the film adaptation of Erin Doom's novel directed by Alessandro Genovesi, premiered. Nicole Sorace took on the role of Elena, a supporting character who is nonetheless key to the emotional arc of the story at the Grave orphanage. The film became Netflix's most-watched title in 89 countries during its first weeks on the platform.
But the role of Elena required a different kind of restraint than her previous work. In this production, the tone was gothic and melancholic, aimed at a young audience looking for a carefully crafted aesthetic. Sorace shared the cast with Caterina Ferioli and Simone Baldasseroni on a set that moved to locations in Ravenna and Rome.
There was no turning back.
The success of the film multiplied her presence on social media exponentially. Despite the media pressure, the actress kept a low profile, focused on finishing her required studies while selecting new scripts. The risk of being typecast in youth roles is high when a project reaches millions of viewers so quickly.
In 2024, her appearances at fashion events such as Milan Fashion Week confirmed that her image is also on the rise beyond the film set. Her career is splitting between auteur cinema and the luxury fashion market. Filming of The Tearsmith lasted exactly seven weeks and had an estimated budget of 6.5 million euros.
