Olivia Rodrigo signed her first Disney contract in 2016. There was no mystique or grand revelation at the start. She was a girl from California with a natural ability to convey angst on camera and a notebook full of early songwriting.
In 2016, she began filming Bizaardvark for Disney Channel. She played Paige Olvera for three seasons in a work environment that demanded recording sketches and comedy songs at an industrial pace. That shoot was her school in vocal technique and discipline under the spotlight.
But the real shift came in 2019.
Disney+ cast her to star in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The role of Nini Salazar-Roberts allowed her to write original songs for the show's storyline. In 2020, her song All I Want racked up millions of organic streams and exceeded every expectation the studio had.
That song was the first sign that her voice mattered more than her ability to act in light comedies. Geffen Records executives quickly offered her a contract that guaranteed ownership of her original recordings.
In January 2021, she released drivers license. The song wasn't a lab-made product designed for radio. It had a classic ballad structure and lyrics that connected with the rawest teenage heartbreak.
No one expected a ballad about a driver's license to break the internet.
The track broke the record for daily Spotify streams for a non-holiday song. **It reached 17 million streams in just 24 hours**. That volume of data forced the industry to rethink how music consumption works on digital platforms.
In May 2021, SOUR hit the shelves. The album blended 1990s pop punk with minimalist piano ballads. It won three Grammy Awards in 2022, but the process was not free of legal trouble over songwriting credits.
She had to give up part of the rights to good 4 u to the members of the band Paramore. She also credited Taylor Swift in 1 step forward, 3 steps back for the use of a piano melody. These technical decisions avoided million-dollar lawsuits and settled disputes over the origins of her influences.
The industry never forgives a lack of authenticity.
In 2023 she decided her second album would sound like distortion and garage rock. GUTS was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York under the direction of producer Daniel Nigro. The sound was more aggressive and less accommodating than her previous work.
And the gamble paid off.
The album debuted at number one in more than fifteen countries. In 2024, she launched a worldwide stadium tour that skipped big choreography to focus on live instrumental performance. Rather than chasing the visual spectacle of other pop stars, she aimed for a direct connection with the audience.
Despite her media reach, she keeps a very small management team. Her mother oversees many of her financial decisions, and she retains complete control over her lyrics. In 2024, the GUTS World Tour grossed **184.6 million dollars** in ticket sales after selling more than one million tickets across 95 different dates.
