Özlem Conker

Özlem Conker was born in Ankara in 1973. She did not chase fame right away, choosing instead to train abroad for an extended period. She studied at the Training Center for the Arts in the United States, which gave her a technical foundation that many of her generation lacked.

The return to Istanbul was not a bed of roses.

She started out in advertising and music videos to pay the bills while auditioning. In 1996 she landed her first supporting role in the series Bizim Ev. It was a low-key shoot, but it caught the attention of casting directors with her restrained gaze and a style of acting that was far from the usual histrionics of Turkish television in the late nineties.

Her real breakthrough came in 2002 with the premiere of Kınalı Kar. She played Nazar, a woman trapped by the traditions of a remote village. Audiences connected with her so strongly that the show ran for three full seasons. It was the moment viewers stopped seeing her as just a pretty face and realized there was a method actress behind every gesture.

But the industry is fickle, and the following years were filled with projects that never quite caught on in prime time.

The weight of maturity on camera

She filmed Sensiz Olmuyor in 2005, and a year later she joined Eksik Etek. None of these shows became a national phenomenon. Conker decided to be more selective about the scripts she accepted and stepped away from the spotlight for periods of time to avoid wearing out her public image.

In 2009 she took part in Bahar Dalları.

The project that changed her career internationally was Karagül in 2013. She played Narin, a character full of secrets and a sadness that demanded complete control over her facial expressions. The series was sold to dozens of countries and put her name on the markets of Latin America and Eastern Europe.

Narin was a test of physical and mental endurance across the 125 episodes of the show. The actress had to shoot in Halfeti, a region of Turkey with extreme weather conditions that toughened her acting style.

The Historical Reconstruction and the Silence

After the exhaustion of such a long series, she sought refuge in period productions. In 2017, she joined the cast of Payitaht: Abdülhamid to bring Bidar Kadın Efendi to life. The role required a regal presence and a command of archaic language that Conker mastered after months of preparation with historical advisors.

The series stayed on air until 2021.

For her, work doesn't end when the set lights go off. She is known to value absolute privacy and rarely gives interviews unless they are directly tied to promoting her projects. In 2022 she accepted the role of Benli Hatun in the series Aşkın Yolculuğu: Hacı Bayram-ı Veli, a production centered on the life of a Sufi mystic.

Filming for this latest production took place on natural plateaus and sets recreating 14th-century Anatolia. Conker earned one of the highest fees of her career thanks to her long experience in historical dramas. The series consists of 26 episodes, all shot entirely in digital format.
