Erkan Bektaş was born in Ankara in 1972 and trained at the theater school in his hometown. His academic education at Ankara University gave him a technical foundation that many actors of his generation overlooked. He started on stage because theater was the only space where acting was taken seriously during the 1990s.
The stage was her real school.
In 2005, the series Ihlamurlar Altında pulled him out of theater obscurity and launched him into national television. He played Salih in a production that became the first major Turkish export hit. But Bektaş was not swept up by the quick fame of the leading men of the time.
He preferred to keep a low profile and focus on the texture of supporting characters. In Turkish television, supporting roles often carry the dramatic weight while the leads show off the wardrobe. So he decided to diversify his career before the industry typecast him for good.
In 2010, he founded his own voice-over studio called Baykuş Seslendirme. The move was not an artistic whim but a business strategy to control his own sound production. For years he worked giving voices to international characters while carefully choosing his on-screen appearances.
And that's when the general public put a face to the name.
His role in Eşkıya Dünyaya Hükümdar Olmaz in 2015 allowed him to explore the crime genre with an uncommon restraint. He avoided the usual theatrics of Turkish drama and opted for an economy of gestures that caught the attention of casting directors. On that shoot, he learned that silence can say more than a scream in the middle of a shootout.
In 2018, he joined the cast of Bir Zamanlar Çukurova to play Abdülkadir Keskin. The role demanded a mix of coldness and resentment that Bektaş delivered without breaking a sweat. The audience responded with ratings peaks above 20% in its time slot.
Many actors try directing when their career declines, but he did it at the height of his television popularity. In 2021, he appeared in the film Akif (a historical drama about the author of the Turkish national anthem). It wasn't a critical success, but it taught him how state-funded film financing works.
Despite offers to star in romantic comedies, he always returned to dry drama. In 2023, he accepted the role of Vural Bakırcıoğlu in the series Safir, shot in the landscapes of Cappadocia. Filming outdoors in sub-zero temperatures tested the physical endurance of the entire crew.
The industry values her punctuality.
In 2024, he joined the cast of Kızıl Goncalar to bring to life a complex character in a storyline about religious and social tensions. The production sparked controversy in Turkey for its portrayal of conservative communities. Bektaş stayed out of the social media controversies and focused on getting through his filming days in Istanbul.
His international distribution deal for his recent works guarantees broadcast in more than 40 countries. His sound studio in the Kadıköy neighborhood processes hundreds of hours of material for streaming platforms every year. The cost of maintaining recording equipment rose 15% due to inflation in electronic components.
