Selen Öztürk was born on July 23, 1980 in Izmir. Her mother is Cypriot and her father is from Uşak. She graduated from the Hacettepe University State Conservatory in 2002 and moved to Istanbul to make her way in the performing arts.
But her career didn't start in the spotlight.
In the early years of her professional career, she specialized in dubbing. Her voice was the one Turkish audiences heard when they watched actresses such as Angelina Jolie or Julia Roberts in movie theaters. This stage gave her complete control over rhythm and diction. She spent more than a decade dubbing Hollywood stars before her face became as recognizable as her voice.
And that technical training shows in every pause she takes when she speaks.
In 2007, she made her film debut in Kukla. It was a necessary but low-key step. The real turning point in her career came in 2011 when she joined the cast of Muhteşem Yüzyıl. She played Gülfem Hatun for three years in a row. In this historical production, she appeared in a total of 81 episodes filmed between 2011 and 2014.
The Turkish industry often typecasts period actors. But Öztürk avoided stagnation by alternating between television and theater. She worked in plays such as 7 Kocalı Hürmüz and Bakhalar. For her, the stage is the place where the vice of the camera is purified.
Music was always her technical refuge.
She has played the piano and guitar with ease since her youth. In 2014, she used these skills to add another layer of depth to her characters. She is not an actress who simply memorizes script lines. She understands the harmonic structure of a scene.
In 2017, she took on the role of Seniha Sultan in the series Payitaht: Abdülhamid. It was another long-running project that demanded extreme restraint in gesture. Critics praised her ability to convey authority without raising her voice. Her name became linked to characters of great moral and social weight.
She appeared in the Netflix series Atiye in 2019, where she played Seher in a plot that blended archaeology and mysticism. The production was distributed in 190 countries. But she kept her feet on the ground and returned to traditional Turkish television formats as soon as the opportunity arose.
In 2023, she joined the cast of Kızıl Goncalar to play Hasna Güneş. The project explores the tensions between secular and conservative sectors in contemporary Turkey. Filming of the first season took place at various locations in Istanbul under the direction of Ömür Atay. The series reached screen shares above 20% in its time slot.
