Buğra Gülsoy never planned to become the most recognizable face of Turkish television when they finished their architecture studies at the Eastern Mediterranean University. That 2004 degree pointed to a future of blueprints and steel structures in Ankara, but university theater had already injected a different venom into their system. While designing buildings, they learned that acting also requires solid foundations (and a lot of patience).
His entry into the industry was not the result of a mass casting call for a teen series. Gülsoy started out in short films and photography, developing his own narrative before going to work for Istanbul's major production companies.
And architecture was left in a drawer.
In 2008 he made his debut in the series Hepimiz Birimiz İçin, but mass recognition took two more years to arrive. It was his role as Vural in Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne? that put him on the international map in 2010. That dark character, tormented by guilt, allowed him to move away from the conventional leading-man image that the industry tends to impose on actors of his look.
But the real leap in scale came with Kuzey Güney in 2011.
Playing Güney Tekinoğlu was a major technical challenge, because he had to hold his own dramatically opposite an already established star. Over the 80 episodes the production ran, Gülsoy built a human and complex antagonist who avoided the usual black-and-white clichés of Turkish drama.
Gülsoy never settled for waiting for the phone to ring with a new offer. In 2017, they decided it was time to tell their own stories and sat down to write the screenplay for Mahalle, a film they also ended up directing. This auteur side sets them apart from many of their generation's peers, because they understand filmmaking as a complete process and not just as being in front of the camera.
His literary work is not the whim of a celebrity with time on his hands.
In 2019 he published his first novel, titled Birinci Kıyamet, a story that explores identity and history through dense storytelling. The bestselling success led him to complete the two-book series with İkinci Kıyamet a year later. Writing allows him to control the pace of his career, especially when filming schedules of 14 hours a day in Istanbul threaten to drain his creativity.
The romantic comedy Aşk Yeniden in 2015 gave him a media and commercial breather. That series showed he could handle comedic timing with the same precision as the historical drama Uyanış: Büyük Selçuklu, filmed in 2020. For the latter production he had to learn horseback riding and sword handling to play Sultan Melikşah, a role that required six months of physical training before stepping onto set.
Not everything in their career has been immediate ratings hits.
Series such as Azize in 2019 were canceled prematurely after just a few episodes for failing to meet their audience share targets. Gülsoy accepted the blow without any public drama and returned to theater, his original refuge, to work through the frustration of TV ratings.
In 2022, they appeared in the series Dünyayla Benim Aramda for Disney Plus, marking their definitive entry into the global streaming market with production standards different from those of free-to-air television. This project prioritized visual quality and compact storytelling over the endless length of traditional Turkish melodramas.
Their most recent television work is from 2024 with the series Bahar.
In this production, they play Evren Yalkın, a surgeon who becomes the emotional counterpoint to the lead character. The series reached screen shares above 10% in its first weeks on air, a figure that in today's Turkish market practically guarantees the long-term survival of any project.
Despite the fame he has built over more than fifteen years in the business, he keeps a careful distance from the tabloid press in his home country. He prefers to talk about his books or the technical details of post-production on his projects. The contract for Bahar in its first season set strict conditions on filming hours to protect the cast's family life.
