In 1980, Demet Evgar was born in Manisa into a family with Albanian roots that saw art as a form of resistance. She began acting at age 17 in an amateur theater group in her hometown. There she understood that acting was not a game but a craft that demanded almost military discipline.
Her education took her through the State Conservatory of Istanbul University. During those years of study she co-founded the group Tiyatro Kılçık with several classmates. She wrote, acted and designed sets while the rest of her generation chased quick fame in TV commercials.
She always knew that the stage comes first.
In 2000, she appeared in her first television series, Yedi Numara. It was a sitcom that Turkish screenwriting schools now study for its freshness. But theater remained her main refuge and the place where she tested her physical limits.
In 2008, she accepted a role that seemed small in a sketch series called 1 Kadın 1 Erkek. The format was simple but daring for television at the time. It addressed romantic relationships without censorship and with a biting humor rarely seen on national screens.
The series ran on air for nearly eight years across various platforms and channels. Demet Evgar was the face of the woman who talked about sex and money without lowering her gaze. But she didn't want to get stuck in the laugh track or in the comfort of easy success.
And then came pure drama.
In 2018, she took the lead role in Avlu. It was an adaptation of the Australian series Wentworth. She played a mother who ends up in prison after an incident of domestic violence. The shoot demanded an exhausting emotional toll and workdays that exceeded fourteen hours a day.
During filming of the first season, the actress visibly lost weight to make her character more realistic. International critics compared her performance to the best European prison dramas for its raw, unpolished quality. Her name began to resonate well beyond Turkey's borders.
In the entertainment industry, though, people forget fast, so she decided to choose her projects carefully after the prison series ended. In 2020, she starred in the film Topal Sükran’ın Maceraları. It was a silent film in which she could only use body language to tell the story of a woman with a disability.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, she returned to mainstream television with Bahar. In this production she plays a woman who resumes her career as a doctor after years devoted exclusively to caring for her family. The series reached audience shares above 25 percent share in its time slot during its first months on air.
The production of this latest series was filmed in Istanbul studios, with a budget per episode of more than two million Turkish lira. The international distribution deal for Latin America was closed before the tenth episode of the first season aired.
