Murat Ünalmış

From basketball courts to the film set

Murat Ünalmış never pursued fame in Istanbul casting calls as a child. His first real ambition was professional basketball, and as a teenager he played in the youth ranks of Fenerbahçe. But a sports career has an early expiration date, so the young man chose to focus on his business administration studies.

The change in direction was total.

After graduating from Marmara University, he felt his place was on stage. He trained at Academy Istanbul and began landing supporting roles in series that few people remember today. In 2005, he appeared in Aşka Sürgün and shortly after in Şöhret.

And the effort paid off.

The phenomenon of the bitter lands

The real breakthrough in his career came in 2010 with the premiere of Yer Gök Aşk. There he played Yusuf Hancıoğlu and met the woman who would become his wife for a brief period. But the role that made him a household name across Europe was Demir Yaman in Bir Zamanlar Çukurova.

In 2018, he took on this acting challenge that would last three intense years. Demir was a complex and at times violent character (a landowner obsessed with control). The show drew ratings above 25% share in Turkey and was successfully exported to more than seventy countries.

It was a period of extreme physical exhaustion.

During filming in the province of Adana, the actor spent months away from his usual surroundings. Shooting a series of that scale demands fourteen-hour days under a scorching sun. In 2021, he decided to leave the project before the story's final wrap-up.

A profile beyond the spotlight

Unlike many leading men of his generation, Ünalmış prefers life in the countryside. In 2023, he returned to the screen in the series Gülcemal, playing a man tormented by his family past. Critics praised his ability to carry the dramatic weight without relying on the genre's usual tricks.

His personal life changed too.

In September 2023, he married Albena Ilieva after two years of a relationship kept secret. The ceremony was intimate and held far from Istanbul's tabloid press. In April 2024, their first son was born, and the actor drastically reduced his public appearances.

His usual residence is a farm in the Cappadocia region. There he runs his own agricultural businesses and keeps his distance from the media noise of the Turkish capital. The contract for his participation in a new digital streaming project was closed for an amount that has not been disclosed to the media.
