The Theory Dropout

Birce Akalay dropped out of the Theater Criticism program at Istanbul University because she preferred acting to observing. That decision in 2004 marked the start of more technical training at the Haliç University conservatory. Before stepping onto a professional stage, she was a finalist in Miss Turkey and worked as a sports presenter on television.

Her first real break came in 2007 with the series Asi. She wasn't the lead, but the shoot gave her a sense of how Turkish sets are structured. The work pace in Istanbul is exhausting, and Akalay quickly learned to manage the waiting time between scenes.

And then 2010 arrived.

That year she landed the role of Havva in Yer Gök Aşk. The production stayed on the air for three seasons and permanently pulled her out of obscurity. But her real international breakthrough came in 2017 with Siyah Beyaz Aşk. The chemistry with her co-star was so obvious that the series was sold to more than 30 countries in just one year.

Breaking Into Global Algorithms

In 2020, she took part in Babil alongside Halit Ergenç. It was an ambitious project about ethics and finance that didn't get the run it deserved on traditional television. That experience pushed her to look for stories with less rigid structures than those of traditional private networks.

In 2022, she premiered Kuş Uçuşu on Netflix. She plays Lale Kıran, a veteran news anchor who faces harassment from an ambitious intern. The series examines the generational clash without falling into the black-and-white moralizing typical of Turkish dramas. Filming for the third and final season wrapped in 2024.

That same 2022, she starred in Mezarlık. It is a four-film series in which she plays Captain Önem Özülkü. The plot focuses exclusively on the investigation of femicides and avoids any unnecessary romantic subplot. The production required Akalay to undergo specific training with police consultants to portray judicial procedures more naturally.

The move into streaming was a strategic win.

Jewelry and Brand Management

Akalay launched her own jewelry line in 2021 under the name Birce Fine Jewellery. She designs the pieces herself, based on sketches she draws during breaks on set. The company operates independently and has its own workshop in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar.

In 2023, the actress decided to reduce her presence at public events to focus on executive producing. Her current contracts include temporary exclusivity clauses that limit her appearances in advertising for cosmetics brands that don't align with her interests. The jewelry brand closed its 2023 fiscal year with a 40 percent sales increase in the European market.

The production budget per episode in her recent projects for digital platforms is around 850,000 euros per installment.
