Kerem Bürsin parked cars in Los Angeles while waiting for a call that never came. He worked as a driver for leading actors and cleaned gyms to pay the rent in the United States. His years in Texas and Boston forged a personality that has little to do with the conventional Ottoman heartthrob archetype.
His childhood was a map of constant moves across Scotland, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia. By age twelve he had lived in seven different countries. This lack of fixed roots forced him to develop an adaptability he would later apply on sets in Istanbul.
He was a foreigner in his own home.
In 2013, he traveled to Turkey to attend a funeral and ended up auditioning for the series Güneşi Beklerken. He wasn't fluent in the language, since his training was entirely Anglo-American. But his American accent suited the profile of Kerem Sayer, and audiences embraced a lead who gestured in a different way.
And the gamble paid off.
That first contract in Turkey required him to take intensive Turkish classes at night. Before filming, he read the scripts with a dictionary by his side to understand the nuances of the local humor. This initial language gap helped him build characters with a highly effective economy of words on screen.
Bürsin soon understood that the Turkish dizi system could devour the creativity of any performer. In 2014 he starred in Şeref Meselesi and realized there that he needed to get involved in technical decision-making. He did not want to be just a face on a fragrance advertising billboard.
He founded Braveborn Films to produce his own projects and avoid predictable scripts. Under this label he championed Yaşamayanlar in 2018, which was the first vampire series in Turkey. It was a major financial risk, but it helped open the local market to genres that had until then been the exclusive territory of Hollywood.
Total control of production became his absolute priority.
In 2020 the phenomenon of Sen Çal Kapımı put him in an unprecedented position of commercial power. The series was sold to more than ninety countries and generated a volume of social media interactions that surpassed high-budget American productions. But Bürsin used that spotlight to diversify his investments into tech companies and sustainable projects.
In 2024 he wrote and starred in the film Mavi Mağara alongside actress Devrim Özkan. The script focused on an existentialist narrative filmed in the natural locations of Kaş. The international distribution deal with streaming platforms ensured the film reached markets where auteur Turkish cinema is hard to access.
But money wasn't the main driving force behind his latest moves.
During 2025, he led the shoot of Son of a Rich, the Turkish adaptation of a successful Russian comedy from 2019. In the project, he played Mete, a wealthy young man who is tricked into believing he has traveled back in time to the 19th century. Filming wrapped with a small technical crew and only three months of post-production to meet the release deadlines for commercial theaters.
Production of the series Kunut also took up much of his professional schedule during that same period. It's a dark drama that moves decisively away from the romantic comedy that brought him global fame a decade ago. The budget per episode for this project exceeded 400,000 dollars due to the complexity of the outdoor locations.
