Language as the First Barrier

Leyla Lydia Tuğutlu was born in Berlin in 1989, and her first language was not Turkish. The daughter of a Turkish father and a German mother, she spent her early years in Germany before the family decided to move to Istanbul so she could start primary school. There she began studying piano and violin at the conservatory.

She won the Miss Turkey pageant in 2008. She represented her country in Johannesburg at the Miss World contest that same year. But the runway was just a stepping stone to television.

The public bought into her gaze.

Her debut came with the series Es-Es in 2008. She played Irem, and that's when she realized music would take a back seat. In 2012, she landed the role of Songül in Karadayı. That production ran for three seasons and gave her the exposure she needed for the industry to stop seeing her as a model who just recited lines.

The profitability of romantic comedy

In 2015, she appeared in Kiralık Aşk. She was only in a few episodes, but her character made enough buzz on social media to earn her first major leading role. That led to Tatlı İntikam in 2016 opposite Furkan Andıç. The chemistry worked, and the series was sold to dozens of countries.

She shot Delibal in 2015 with Çağatay Ulusoy. It was a risky bet on the film's dramatic take on mental health. It grossed over 16 million Turkish lira at the local box office. That success gave her the freedom to choose projects more carefully from then on.

And the gamble paid off.

She appeared in Bu Şehir Arkandan Gelecek in 2017 and Kızım in 2018. In the latter, she played Candan, a much more restrained and mature role than her previous work. But the real physical challenge came with Uyanış: Büyük Selçuklu in 2020. She had to learn horseback riding and sword fighting to bring Elçin Hatun to life.

The weight of a historical production

She traded her heels for mud.

She married Ceyhun Ergin in an intimate ceremony in Germany in 2022. In January 2023, her son, Evren Deniz, was born. This period kept her away from sets for a while so she could focus on raising her child in a private setting.

In 2024, she returned to work with the filming of the movie Rehber. Her contract stipulated limited working hours so she wouldn't interfere with her family life in Istanbul. The film wrapped post-production with an estimated budget of five million lira.
