Burcu Özberk didn’t start out looking for fame on social media. She trained in classical theater at Hacettepe University’s Ankara State Conservatory. There, she learned that acting requires almost military discipline before you ever step onto a set.
The stage was her first home.
In 2013, she got her big break in Muhteşem Yüzyıl. She played Huricihan Sultan, and that role was her baptism by fire in front of millions of viewers. But the Turkish industry is ruthless, and a supporting role in a period superproduction is not enough.
Two years later came Güneşin Kızları. Her role as Nazlı Yılmaz took her out of the historical drama niche and plunged her into the teen fan phenomenon. Producers saw that she looked good on screen, but she preferred to stay connected to the stage with Erdal Beşikçioğlu’s theater company.
That’s because Özberk has always kept one foot in the Tatbikat Theater. She appeared in plays such as Woyzeck Masalı while her face covered Istanbul’s bus stops. That duality between stage prestige and TV profitability defined the first stage of her career.
In 2019, she agreed to star in Love Trap. Her chemistry with Çağlar Ertuğrul was so undeniable that the series topped the ratings for months. For her work, she won the Altın Kelebek Award for Best Actress in a Romantic Comedy in 2020.
And the gamble paid off.
She repeated the winning formula in 2021 with Love, Reason, Get Even. The series was sold to dozens of countries and built an international fan base that analyzes her every move. But romantic comedy has a shelf life, and the actress sought out less lighthearted roles.
She took on more dramatic roles to avoid being typecast. Turkish audiences are demanding when it comes to their stars, and audience loyalty is measured week by week in the broadcast TV ratings.
In 2023, she filmed Kraliçe and Ruhun Duymaz. Neither production reached the ratings of her earlier work on mainstream television. Budget cuts and premature cancellations are part of the game in the Turkish entertainment industry.
Netflix came calling that same 2023 with the movie You Do You. The feature film ranked among the platform’s global top 10 during its first few weeks of release. The production featured custom costume design to highlight the lead character’s eccentric style.
So she turned to diversifying her release platforms. Alternating between streaming and traditional TV allows her to maintain an international profile while continuing to negotiate high-profile advertising deals.
The actress signed a contract for her next project with a national network, including a territorial exclusivity clause and a guarantee of twenty-six episodes.
