Mandel Bruce Patinkin is not an easy actor. In 1979, he won a Tony for playing Che in Evita, and from that moment on he made it clear that his intensity was not negotiable for casting directors. His tenor voice and a gaze capable of piercing the stage gave him a special standing on Broadway during the 1970s.
Demanding is his currency.
In 1984, he starred in Sunday in the Park with George under the direction of Stephen Sondheim. That play about Seurat's pointillism demanded a mathematical precision that almost no one in New York could replicate. But Patinkin was not after technical perfection; he sought an emotional connection, one that often bordered on a personal obsession with his characters.
In 1987, he stepped into the shoes of Inigo Montoya for The Princess Bride. During the months of preparation, he learned fencing with both hands so the choreography would look real and not be an editing trick. For the final duel scene, he thought about his own father, who died of cancer, to channel the rage of that loss.
And that nearly cost him his career.
American television discovered that Patinkin was a magnet for audiences but a headache for production schedules. In 1994, he accepted the role of Dr. Jeffrey Geiger in Chicago Hope. He left the series after the first season because he couldn't stand being away from his family or the pace of shooting for a mainstream network.
In 2005, he repeated the pattern with Criminal Minds. After filming just two seasons, he disappeared from the set without warning because the show's violent storylines were unbearable for his mental health. Years later, he admitted that signing that contract was the biggest mistake of his professional career.
But the phone rang again in 2011.
The series Homeland offered him the role of Saul Berenson, and this time he stayed for all eight seasons, until 2020. His portrayal of the CIA mentor earned him four consecutive Emmy Award nominations. On this project, he found a balance between the depth of the script and the stability he had been missing.
Starting in 2020, his son Isaac began posting home videos of the actor on social media. In these short clips, we see a seventy-year-old man struggling with technology and sharing his views on international politics with brutal honesty. This content connected him with a young audience who had no idea about his stage musical work.
He was never an easy guy.
In 2024, he starred in the series Death and Other Details, playing detective Rufus Cotesworth. Filming took place on large sets recreating a luxury ocean liner, and Patinkin insisted his character maintain a melancholic tone, away from the usual tropes of the crime genre. The production cost several million dollars per episode but was canceled after its first installment.
Her Homeland contract required her to shoot on location in Morocco and Germany for much of the 2010s. Her official discography now includes thirteen studio albums, focused mainly on the American songbook and pieces in Yiddish.
