Halit Ergenç dropped out of Marine Engineering after just one year at Istanbul Technical University. He had no interest in ships or mechanics. He enrolled at Mimar Sinan University to study opera and ended up working as a computer operator to pay his bills. The actor whom half the world associates with Ottoman luxury started out cleaning carpets and performing musical theater in the United States.
It was a trial by fire.
During his time in New York, he took part in the production of The King and I and experienced the precarious life of actors chasing a break on Broadway. But he returned to Turkey because the local market was starting to take off. In 2004, he starred in Aliye, and his face became a regular presence in Turkish homes. That project gave him the stability he needed to choose his next steps with an almost surgical coolness.
In 2006, he took on the role of Onur Aksal in Binbir Gece. The series was sold to more than 80 countries and became a mass phenomenon that still shapes the export of Turkish drama today. During filming, he met Bergüzar Korel. They married in 2009, and the wedding was treated by the press as a state affair.
To play Suleiman the Magnificent in Muhteşem Yüzyıl, he spent a year and a half getting into shape physically. He not only grew a real beard, which he kept for nearly four years. He also studied 16th-century court protocol so his way of walking would carry the weight of an empire. The filming of this production between 2011 and 2014 required a logistical effort of four million dollars just for costumes and sets.
The business changed hands.
Ergenç didn't get stuck in period historical drama. In 2016, he shared the screen with his wife again in Vatanım Sensin. International critics praised his ability to hold long close-ups with barely any dialogue. His move to streaming platforms was a natural transition driven by demand in the global market.
In 2020, he led the cast of Babil. In this series, he played an economics professor who gets dragged into a pyramid scheme to save his son. The tone was dry and gray. It was a deliberate departure from the opulence of his earlier roles. However, the series faced outside pressure over its political themes and ended earlier than originally planned.
In 2024, he filmed the series Ten for Netflix under the direction of Umut Aral. It's a medical thriller in which he plays an anatomy professor obsessed with mortality. The production was shot entirely in Istanbul, with a crew of more than 200 people per workday.
And the risk was worth it.
Also in 2024, he took part in the digital project Adsız Aşıklar. This time he moved away from heavy drama to explore a romantic comedy with psychological undertones. Ergenç typically requires rest periods between projects in his contracts so he can devote time to music and his family in London.
Production company O3 Medya confirmed that the budgets of its recent projects exceed the usual standards of the Turkish industry. The international distribution contract for its works in 2025 includes exclusivity clauses for Spanish-speaking territories. His salary per episode remains one of the three highest in Turkish television.
