The Legacy of the Stage

Bergüzar Korel was born in Istanbul in 1982 with her craft already learned at home.

The daughter of Tanju Korel and Hülya Darcan, she grew up among sets and scripts before attending classes at Mimar Sinan University. Her theater training shaped how she approaches acting (far from the hollow glitter of catalog celebrities). Before reaching mass fame, she worked in various classic stage productions where she learned to use silence as a dramatic tool.

In 2006, she accepted the role of Sehrazat Evliyaoglu in Binbir Gece.

It was the start of a phenomenon that crossed the borders of Turkey. The series was sold to more than 80 countries and forced production companies to rethink the value of their stars in the international market. But filming was not easy. Media pressure over her personal relationship with Halit Ergenç nearly derailed the production in its second season.

And the noise didn't stop her.

The Law of Silence and Courtroom Drama

Between 2012 and 2015, she starred in Karadayı alongside Kenan İmirzalıoğlu. The courtroom drama set in the 1970s demanded a restrained performance that moved her away from the traditional image of the romantic heroine. The series reached a 25% audience share during prime time and stayed on air for three full seasons.

She prefers silence to scandal. In 2016, she again shared the screen with her husband in Vatanım Sensin, a period drama about the Turkish War of Independence. The production's demanding technical standards required the actress to go through strict physical training to film action scenes under the constant rain of Izmir.

But her interest had always been in the evolution of the format.

The Leap to Streaming Platforms and a Return to Istanbul

In 2021, she decided to move her residence to London, seeking a break from the harassment of the Turkish press. During that time, she turned down several long-running TV projects to focus on shorter, more direct scripts. In 2024, she starred in Düğüm, Amazon Prime's first original production in Turkey, playing an investigative journalist.

It was a necessary change of style.

Because conventional television no longer offered the challenges she wanted at this stage of her career. In 2024, she also filmed Annem Ankara, a series based on real events set in the Turkish capital during the 1990s. The production was shot on location in Ankara to preserve the gritty realism of the era.

Production on Annem Ankara wrapped its shooting schedule with a total of 120 days of actual work.
