Gary Busey wasn't always a caricature of himself on reality TV. There was a time when his clenched jaw and electric gaze promised a much-needed generational succession in late-1970s Hollywood. Everything exploded with The Buddy Holly Story in 1978.
For that role, he lost thirty-three pounds and learned to play all the songs live. Critics were won over by a performance that earned him his only Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He was 34 years old and the world was at his feet.
But success in the film industry is often a wild beast that's hard to tame.
Before succeeding in front of the camera, he tried his luck in music under the name Teddy Jack Eddy. He played drums for Leon Russell, and he later carried that rhythmic, almost violent energy into his characters. In 1987, he played the villain Mr. Joshua in Lethal Weapon. That icy hitman role gave him a second life in mainstream action movies.
A motorcycle accident in 1988 changed his brain structure and his career forever. He was not wearing a helmet.
After undergoing surgery and suffering several minutes of clinical death, his personality became expansive and unfiltered. Doctors confirmed that his frontal lobe had suffered severe damage. This directly affected the way he worked on film sets.
During the nineties, he specialized in high-end supporting roles that bordered on psychopathic. In 1991, he shot Point Break under director Kathryn Bigelow. He played a veteran FBI agent, worn down by life, trying to restore order amid the chaos of Keanu Reeves.
That overwhelming intensity allowed him to work with directors such as Steven Seagal on Under Siege in 1992. But the industry began to view him with suspicion. His behavior became erratic and difficult to manage for the insurance companies of the major studios.
The industry never forgives instability.
He took part in minor projects and B-movies that barely made it to theaters. In 1997, he had a brief appearance in Lost Highway by David Lynch, proving he could still unsettle audiences with a single gesture. It was one of his last roles in top-tier auteur cinema.
The transition into the new century pushed him away from major productions for good. In 2003, he starred in his own show, I am with Busey, where he played up his image as an eccentric guru and tossed out strange aphorisms. Audiences no longer wanted the method actor, but the flamboyant character.
He won the British edition of Celebrity Big Brother in 2014. He was the first American to do so, after weeks spent in a house where his housemates didn't know how to react to his outbursts. The win was a bitter victory for those who remembered his dramatic talent.
And the public forgot about Buddy Holly.
In 2016, he appeared in the fourth installment of the Sharknado franchise, playing Wilford Wexler. His appearances at fan conventions became his main source of income and connection to the outside world. The man who once competed against Robert De Niro for the golden statuette was now signing autographs for 50 dollars.
In August 2022, the Cherry Hill police in New Jersey charged him with several counts of inappropriate sexual conduct after a fan event. The police report detailed three counts of non-consensual physical contact. Bail was set at 50,000 dollars to prevent his immediate imprisonment.
