Meryem Uzerli arrived in Turkey in 2010 without being able to string two sentences together in the local language. The production of Magnificent Century was looking for a face that hadn't been overexposed on national television, and she fit that search. She accepted the role of Hürrem Sultan in less than 48 hours.
And the gamble paid off.
For the next three years, she lived cooped up on a Istanbul set, filming 16-hour days. But the massive success brought a psychological toll that the Turkish press dubbed exhaustion syndrome. In May 2013, the actress abruptly left the series and returned to Berlin to check into a rest clinic.
Her departure forced the writers to change the direction of the main storyline. The Turkish industry doesn't forgive walkouts, but the ratings during that period were too high to ignore her. The series was exported to more than 70 countries and generated profits that still fuel its producer, Tims Productions, today.
In 2014, her first daughter was born in Germany and the media spotlight shifted to her private life. Tabloids tried to exploit her breakup, but she chose silence and managing her own cosmetics brand. It was a period of introspection in which she turned down several multimillion-dollar contracts in the Middle East.
She tried returning to television drama in 2016 with Gecenin Kraliçesi. The series did not reach the expected ratings and was canceled after fifteen episodes. She then decided her path lay in independent film and in projects with lighter workloads.
That same year, she shot Annemin Yarası. In this film, she played a Bosnian woman in a story about the aftermath of war. Filming took place in Belgrade and marked her first serious attempt to break away from the period drama that made her famous.
Her work pace dropped sharply by her own choice.
In 2020, she starred in Kovan, a film in which she plays a beekeeper who must confront nature and her own traumas. The movie had a modest run at international film festivals, but it helped rehabilitate her image beyond soap operas. The real turning point came with the arrival of streaming platforms in the Turkish market.
In 2024, she premiered the series RU on Disney+. The story follows a romance between a mature woman and a gifted young man in a coastal setting. The production had a European-level budget and was filmed entirely in the Izmir region.
Uzerli now maintains a permanent residence in Berlin and travels to Turkey only for specific shoots. Her priority has shifted to family stability over constant exposure on the red carpet. In 2021, her second daughter was born, which finally shaped her professional schedule.
The actress manages her social media presence with a direct marketing strategy that bypasses the tabloid press. In 2023, she signed a sponsorship deal with a Russian jewelry brand worth one million euros a year. Filming for her latest ad campaign lasted just three days at a photography studio in Paris.
