Nurgül Yeşilçay

Nurgül Yeşilçay completed her theater studies at the State Conservatory of Anatolia University in 1998. That same year, she landed her first role in the film Herşey Çok Güzel Olacak. She wasn't chasing instant fame, but Turkish audiences reacted electrically to her on-screen presence.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2002, the entire country stopped to watch Asmalı Konak. The series hit peak ratings of 81% and pushed producers to shoot a final film to wrap up the storyline in theaters. Yeşilçay played Bahar, and her face soon appeared on magazine covers and beauty products across the region.

But she preferred the risk of art-house cinema. In 2005, she agreed to star in Eğreti Gelin under the direction of Atıf Yılmaz. Because success on television was never enough for her ambitions. She won the Best Actress award at the Adana Film Festival for playing a woman who defied the social conventions of rural Turkey.

Cannes and the European Market

Fatih Akin was cast in 2007 for a key role in Auf der anderen Seite (On the Other Side). The film competed in the official selection at the Cannes Film Festival and took home the award for Best Screenplay. Nurgül Yeşilçay proved that her dry, political drama style fit the kind of European cinema being made at the time.

Europe got her message.

In 2014, she returned to mainstream television with Paramparça. The contract set a fee of 140,000 Turkish lira per episode, one of the highest sums ever paid to an actress in the history of the country's private television. The show was sold to more than 50 countries, including several Latin American markets.

She left the series after its second season following a public clash with the lead actor. The local press filled pages with details from the set, but she held firm on the importance of respect on the set. Money doesn't buy silence.

Lienzos y regresos pactados

In 2020, she decided to show a different side of herself and held her first painting exhibition in the Karaköy neighborhood. The show was called Avrat Ot and featured paintings where the female body was the central axis of the visual narrative. So she turned to her brushes for refuge and sold most of the pieces during the first week of the show.

The body has its own limits.

In 2022, she filmed the action comedy Kim Bu Aile?. She had to undergo an intensive five-month martial arts training program to perform her own risky stunts without stunt doubles. It was a physical challenge that pulled her away from conventional drama for a while.

In 2023, she led the cast of Veda Mektubu, playing Alanur Yıldız. The Kanal D series explored past mistakes and family pressure within Istanbul's high society. Critics praised her voice and her control of silence as her strongest dramatic tools.

The production of her film Son Bir Gece in 2024 featured a crew of 85 people and was shot entirely on natural locations along the Turkish coast.
