Hanna Schygulla was born in 1943 in Upper Silesia, a region that today belongs to Poland. These were wartime years, and her father was at the front. The little girl who arrived in Munich in her mother's arms could never have known she would become the face of a Germany trying to forgive itself through film.
She met Rainer Werner Fassbinder in 1967 at an acting school. It wasn't an immediate professional spark, but something in Schygulla's gaze matched the director's anger. They made more than twenty films together in barely a decade.
Fassbinder was a tyrant, and she was his counterweight.
In 1969, she took part in Love Is Colder Than Death. It was their first feature film together, and critics didn't know where to put themselves faced with such acting dryness. Schygulla didn't act in a traditional way, because she preferred distance and emptiness. So many accused her of being the director's puppet.
But reality was very different on the sets of the Fassbinder factory. She was one of the few people who dared to talk back to the genius in the leather jacket. In 1979, The Marriage of Maria Braun arrived, and the Silver Bear in Berlin confirmed that her magnetism was real.
After Fassbinder's death in 1982, she decided Germany had become too small and suffocating for her. She moved to Paris without looking back and began working with directors who wanted more than a German muse. Jean-Luc Godard cast her in Passion in 1982, and Marco Ferreri featured her in Histoire de Piera a year later.
The camera always sought her out instinctively.
She won the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1983 for that role opposite Ferreri. It was a key moment in proving that her career didn't depend on a single man. And she began singing, because music had always been there, waiting for its turn.
Her cabaret shows and Brecht songs toured theaters across half the world. Schygulla never wanted to be a traditional Hollywood star. She turned down offers that would have filled her bank account but would have emptied her artistic voice.
In 2007, she worked with Fatih Akin on Al otro lado. She played a mother seeking redemption, and she did it with a restraint that was unsettling. She no longer needed big gestures to dominate the screen.
And then the younger generation of cinema arrived to claim her presence.
François Ozon directed her in Everything Went Fine in 2021. Two years later, in 2023, she appeared in Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos. In this British production, she shared scenes with Emma Stone and proved that her physical presence is still a first-class asset.
She has lived in Paris for decades and rarely gives long interviews. In 2010, she received the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for her entire career. The award weighs exactly four kilos of gilded bronze.
