Paulo Avelino is not your typical product of Philippine television design. Although he came out of a talent contest in 2006, his career quickly moved away from the easy path. Back then, the system was looking for interchangeable faces for afternoon soap operas, but he preferred independent film.
Industry insiders expected a leading man, and he delivered a method actor.
In 2011, he starred in Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa. The film, about dance and poetry, earned him the Gawad Urian award for Best Actor. It was the moment critics stopped seeing him as a face from Baguio and started analyzing his craft.
But artistic recognition doesn't always pay the bills in Manila. So in 2012, he accepted a role in Walang Hanggan. The production reached audience ratings above 40 percent in his country. He made his name bankable for major studios without losing the respect of auteur directors.
His career changed scale when he worked under Jerrold Tarog. In 2015, he appeared briefly in Heneral Luna, playing General Gregorio del Pilar. It was a small bet that ended up spawning its own sequel three years later.
In 2018, Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral premiered. For this shoot, the actor spent months studying war diaries and practicing horseback riding. The film steered away from cheap heroics to portray a young leader full of doubts and strategic mistakes. The budget topped 80 million Philippine pesos, making it one of the most expensive productions in the country's history.
And the gamble paid off.
Avelino didn't limit himself to acting in front of the camera during that period. He got involved in the financial structure of projects through his own production company, Wasabi Films. He understood that to choose risky roles, he needed control over the contracts.
In 2020, he broke with his public image in Fan Girl. In this film he played himself, but under a dark and violent light. The movie swept the Metro Manila Film Festival awards and confirmed he was not afraid to tear down his own pedestal as a mass idol.
And that's where the business gets personal.
Around 2023, his professional partnership with actress Kim Chiu revived streaming platforms' interest in him. The series Linlang was designed specifically for on-demand viewing before moving to free-to-air television. This strategic move allowed the production to have a visual finish much closer to film than to the traditional studio format.
In 2024, the local adaptation of What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim wrapped its broadcast run with distribution deals in several Southeast Asian markets. Filming of the final episodes was completed over shooting days of 16 hours under strict technical syndication protocols.
