Penelope Mitchell was born in Melbourne with a destiny that seemed more tied to law than to the spotlight of Hollywood. The daughter of a French artist and an Australian businessman, she grew up in an environment where European culture and Oceanic pragmatism mixed daily. Before flying to the United States, she completed her studies in Arts and Media Communications and came close to steering her career toward law after achieving brilliant academic results.
The decision was final.
In 2012, she decided her future lay in acting rather than in the courtroom. Her first steps in Australian television were brief but helped agents in Los Angeles take notice of her profile. Mitchell doesn't have that manufactured-star air. She has a natural, aristocratic detachment that fit perfectly with the new wave of genre productions flooding streaming platforms.
And the industry responded quickly.
In 2013, she landed the role of Letha Godfrey in the series Hemlock Grove. It was one of Netflix's early bets on Gothic horror, and the production featured names such as Eli Roth in directing. Mitchell played a young woman whose storyline verged on the supernatural and the incestuous. The shoot in Toronto was grueling due to the weather conditions, but it gave her the experience she needed to understand how a major American production machine worked.
Her global visibility increased dramatically in 2014 when she joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries. In the show's sixth season, she played Liv Parker, a witch with a dramatic arc full of family sacrifices. Young adult fiction fans welcomed her with enthusiasm. But Mitchell avoided being typecast in teen drama and sought projects that allowed her to explore darker or more physically demanding roles.
But genre cinema has its own rules.
In 2019, she took on the challenge of joining the reboot of Hellboy under the direction of Neil Marshall. She played Ganeida, a witch who decides to confront the main villain played by Milla Jovovich. Although the film fell short of its global box office expectations, Mitchell stood out for her ability to hold her own on screen alongside actors of the caliber of David Harbour and Ian McShane. The film's budget exceeded $50 million.
After that stage of big productions, the actress decided to diversify her choices. In 2020, she appeared in the thriller What We Found, and in 2022 she shot The Hyperions alongside Cary Elwes. In the latter film, she played Vista Mandulbaum in a story that blended superheroes with a strongly marked retro aesthetic. It was an independent project that stayed far from the noise of the major California studios.
In 2023, she shared the screen with Aaron Eckhart in the action film Muzzle. Filming took place mainly in Louisville, Kentucky, and Mitchell played a supporting but key role in the police thriller plot. A year later, in 2024, she starred in the horror film Sting, directed by Kiah Roache-Turner. The production centered on a giant spider that terrorizes a family in an apartment building, and the shoot used practical effects designed by Weta Workshop.
