Pilar Rubio entered Spanish homes through a microphone at La Sexta and an attitude that challenged the rigidity of 2006 television. She didn't aim to be the friendly face of the news. Her work on Sé lo que hicisteis… involved chasing celebrities with a mix of irony and energy that ended up defining the tone of an entire network in its early days.
In 2009, she decided to break out of that mold. She signed with Telecinco under an exclusivity contract that created unprecedented media buzz in the national industry. The transition was not easy, however, because the public associated her with a very specific style of humor that hardly fit the formats of rival networks.
Her move into fiction came in 2011 with Piratas.
That adventure series received scathing reviews from the specialized press and failed to hit the expected ratings. It was a hard blow. Still, that stumble as an actress led her to rethink her professional profile and step away from acting to focus on pure entertainment.
In 2014, she joined the team of El Hormiguero on Antena 3. What started as a guest collaboration became a physical challenge segment that required months of technical preparation for just a few minutes on air. The show's average audience topped two million viewers during her riskiest stunts.
Away from the spotlight of linear TV, Rubio's strategy shifted toward publishing and wellness. In 2016 she published Embarazada, ¿y ahora qué? as a practical guide drawn from her own personal experience. It was not a book of anecdotes but a manual reviewed by nutrition and physiotherapy experts.
And the market responded positively.
Despite moving residences for family reasons, her professional activity never stopped. In 2021, she launched her own swimwear line in collaboration with the Selmark brand. She was involved in pattern design and in choosing technical fabrics to ensure the garments performed in real training settings.
Her presence on streaming platforms took shape in 2022 with the show Discovering Canary Islands for Rakuten TV. It was a production shot entirely in English, aimed at an international audience across more than 40 European countries. The production budget allowed for high-definition technical execution rare in travel formats.
In 2023, she took on the role of host of Make Up Stars for the RTVE Play platform. The competition sought new talent in professional makeup and beauty. During the recordings, Rubio kept a restrained hosting style that let the technical judges and contestants take center stage.
For 2024, her schedule was filled with the renewal of her role on the jury of The Edge. On this Atresmedia show, her job is to test the endurance and skill of other public figures under pressure. The contract calls for eight weeks of intensive recording at the Madrid studios.
The production company 7 and Acción handles the format's international distribution rights.
