Miguel Rafael Martos Sánchez stepped onto a film set for the first time with no intention of hiding his flair for theatrics. He was 1966 years old, and the Spanish film industry was churning out rural comedies by the dozen for the regime's audiences. But the kid from Linares arrived with a different score under his arm.

Director Mario Camus chose to lean into his darker side in Cuando tú no estás to move him away from the folkloric postcard image. The experiment confused the traditional distributors of the time.

No one expected such restraint in his gestures.

Mario Camus's Camera and European Melodrama

Camus understood that the singer worked best on screen when the frame reined in his larger-than-life stage presence. They made three feature films together between 1966 and 1968. In Al ponerse el sol and Digan lo que digan, the Cantabrian filmmaker drew on techniques borrowed from French art-house cinema, using long takes and chiaroscuro lighting that broke with the flat aesthetic of Spanish musical films.

And audiences filled the theaters because Raphael projected a cosmopolitan modernity. The camera followed him through Madrid or Buenos Aires as if he were a British pop star, dodging hordes of swooning female fans with an unusual energy for Spanish cinema of the time.

Benito Perojo's production company signed multimillion-peseta contracts to secure his exclusivity at the box office. He earned four million pesetas per film, an astronomical sum that placed him at the top of the era's artist fees.

American Contracts and the Leap into the Theatrical Abyss

In the late sixties, Vicente Escrivá took over directing with El golfo, a production shot in Acapulco alongside Shirley Jones. The film aimed to open doors in the Anglo-Saxon market through exotic romances and songs performed in English. As a result, the restraint that Camus had designed was buried under tourist postcards and musical numbers geared toward the radio formats of the era.

In 1973, that film period continued with Volveré a nacer, directed by Javier Aguirre. The script tried to blend elements of low-budget crime cinema, but the commercial formula was already showing serious signs of exhaustion.

Raphael decided to step away from film sets for almost three decades. He preferred the immediate response of the stage.

In 2000, he took on the theatrical challenge of starring in the Spanish version of the musical Jekyll & Hyde at the Teatro Calderón in Madrid. He endured a grueling run of daily performances, switching between two opposing vocal registers in a matter of seconds and pushing his lung capacity and physical stamina to the absolute limit.

His body said enough.

In April 2003, he underwent an emergency liver transplant at Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid after acute liver failure. Many considered his career finished that spring, but within a few months he was booking dates to return to the stage.

Álex de la Iglesia's Black Comedy Redemption

It took guts to poke fun at his own myth, and Álex de la Iglesia found the perfect angle. In 2015, the Bilbao-born director offered him the role of Alphonso in the black comedy Mi gran noche, playing an egotistical, scheming tyrant who blew up the mannerisms of the sentimental ballad.

He agreed on one condition: to play the most despicable character in the script.

During production, he asked for no special treatment compared with the rest of the cast. He endured three weeks of night shoots in an industrial estate in Madrid, surrounded by four hundred sweaty extras, plastic cups and high-voltage cables. Critics praised his biting portrayal without reservation, rewarding the merciless way he exposed his own public image.

In 2021, the streaming platform Movistar Plus+ premiered the documentary series Raphaelismo, which used the archive of Televisión Española and restored home videos to chronologically organize his audiovisual work.

The film Mi gran noche ended its commercial run after grossing 2.4 million euros at the Spanish box office and drawing 386,000 moviegoers to theaters.
