Rebecca Ferguson was born in Stockholm in 1983 and grew up in the Vasastan neighborhood. Her mother is British and her father is Swedish. This cultural mix allowed her to speak English without a trace of a Nordic accent from childhood.
Being bilingual was her first insurance policy.
At fifteen, she made her debut in the series Nya tider. It was a massive hit in Sweden and ran until 2000. But teen fame felt suffocating, and she chose to step away from the spotlight for nearly a decade.
She moved to the south coast of Sweden to live in a windmill. She worked at a daycare and taught tango classes in a small coastal town. That retreat ended in 2011 when director Richard Hobert spotted her at a market and asked her to star in A One-Way Trip to Antibes.
Her true breakthrough beyond her European roots came in 2013. Ferguson landed the lead role in the historical miniseries The White Queen. Her performance as Elizabeth Woodville earned her a Golden Globe nomination.
Tom Cruise saw that series and insisted that she co-star in the fifth installment of Mission: Impossible. There was no conventional casting process for the character of Ilsa Faust. The actor was looking for someone with a physical presence that didn't depend on special effects.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation hit theaters in 2015, and critics praised her athletic ability. She performed most of her stunts herself, without relying on stunt doubles. For her, technical realism comes before comfort on set.
The industry found an actress who needed no gimmicks.
Ferguson didn't limit herself to pure action franchises. In 2017, she appeared in the musical The Greatest Showman, playing singer Jenny Lind. Although her singing voice was dubbed by Loren Allred in the songs, her stage presence carried the dramatic weight of the second act.
Filming Doctor Sleep in 2019 confirmed her interest in dark characters. Her take on Rose the Hat moved away from the usual clichés of contemporary horror films. As a result, her name began appearing on the most demanding Hollywood casting lists.
In 2021, she took on the role of Lady Jessica in the adaptation of Dune directed by Denis Villeneuve. The character called for total restraint and precise, controlled gestures. Filming in the deserts of Jordan and Abu Dhabi meant twelve-hour days in extreme temperatures.
Her professional ambitions went beyond acting in front of the camera. In 2023, production began on the science fiction series Silo for Apple TV+. Here, Ferguson serves as lead actress and executive producer.
She oversees budgets and creative decisions from the pre-production stage. The first season had an estimated budget of fifteen million dollars per episode. She personally supervised the design of the vertical sets that define the series' aesthetic.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, she returned to the world of Arrakis in Dune: Part Two. The film grossed more than $711 million at the global box office. Ferguson also signed deals for upcoming projects, including Mercy and the film adaptation of Peaky Blinders.
Filming for Mercy took place mainly in Los Angeles in 2025, under the direction of Timur Bekmambetov. The production used cutting-edge virtual filming technology to cut the crew's travel costs.
