Renee Griffin appears on screen wielding a futuristic weapon alongside a very young Angelina Jolie. It's 1993 and the shoot for Cyborg 2 doesn't promise great critical praise. But Griffin holds her own with a physical presence that many casting directors of the era mistook for an insurmountable creative limit.
Born in Long Beach, her entry into the industry followed the playbook of California actresses of the late eighties. In 1991 she appeared in The Guyver under the name Renee Allman. That Japanese science fiction film, adapted for the American market, was the first sign that her look fit low-budget productions with plenty of imagination.
And the industry typecast her fast.
During the 1990s, her name frequently appeared in the credits of thrillers and direct-to-video action films. In 1996 she starred in The Showgirl Murders, playing a dancer stalked by a killer. The script was predictable, but she brought a restraint that lifted the material above the genre average.
It wasn't all B-movie action.
Her time on television allowed her to explore less explosive registers. Between 1990 and 1993 she played Lanie on the series General Hospital. That experience in the daily drama format gave her the training needed to handle dense dialogue and frantic shooting schedules. On daily soap sets, there's no room for mistakes or acting doubts.
In 1998 she married actor James Marshall. Her union with the star of Twin Peaks led to a shift in her professional priorities, and her appearances became deliberately less frequent. Griffin carefully chose her projects to focus on family life in Los Angeles.
In 2001, Griffin reconnected with a mainstream audience through Port Charles. There she played Danielle Courtenay across several episodes and regained the visibility that direct-to-video cinema had denied her. But Griffin never chased the noise of the red carpet at any cost.
She decided to step away from the spotlight.
Her appearance in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2005, directed by Richard J. Lewis, was one of her last notable jobs in mainstream television. In that episode she played a nurse caught up in a complex criminal plot. The production had a budget of two million dollars per episode.
In 2011 she appeared in an episode of the series Criminal Minds playing Alice. Filming took place at the Quixote studios in West Hollywood during the spring. The actress closed out the most active phase of her career with this technical collaboration before focusing on personal projects outside the commercial film circuit.
