At sixteen, he played drums in garages in Maracaibo because he was terrified of standing in front of a microphone. Héctor Eduardo Reglero Montaner had arrived in Venezuela from the working-class outskirts of Buenos Aires at the age of seven, dealing with asthma and an almost debilitating shyness. When the lead singer of his youth band fell ill just before a school festival, he had no choice but to step up to the front.

And the move paid off perfectly.

That afternoon, he discovered an unusual vocal range, able to reach high notes without losing body. He adopted his mother's surname to make his recording debut in 1976 with a single that went completely unnoticed, paid for out of his own pocket. He spent almost a decade grinding it out on local labels, balancing journalism studies with performances in half-empty venues.

The turning point came in 1986. Record label Rodven Records backed his orchestrated pop ballad and placed Yo que te amé as the soundtrack to the telenovela Marta y Javier. On Latin American television in the eighties, appearing in the credits of a top-rated production was equivalent to selling hundreds of thousands of vinyl records within weeks.

With Tan enamorados in 1988, he broke sales charts in Mexico, Colombia and the American South, cleverly adapting a song by Italian singer Gianni Togni with a melodic touch. He understood before many of his generation's colleagues that the television melodrama industry was the best promotional showcase on the planet.

The media clan and the global stage

During the nineties, he produced hits such as Me va a extrañar, Déjame llorar and Castillo azul, refining a commercial formula that combined acoustic arrangements with precisely measured vocal drama. But when physical record sales began to collapse at the turn of the century, he didn't wait around for things to change by magic.

In 1999, he lent his voice to and wrote Bésame for the Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea. The song multiplied his reach among a new generation that didn't even buy cassettes.

Shortly after, he launched his own label, Hecho a Mano, through which he mentored new performers and began shaping the careers of his own children. Mau, Ricky and Evaluna learned the trade at the mixing desk before stepping onto a commercial stage. The singer became the manager of a pop content factory that spanned everything from soft reggaeton to gospel ballads.

Between 2012 and 2021, he alternated as a judge on editions of La Voz in Colombia, Mexico and Argentina. His TV work functioned as a continuous public relations campaign, exposing his classic catalog to audiences who listened to music exclusively on YouTube and Spotify.

Nobody around him doubted his instinct for visual formats anymore.

In 2022, Disney+ premiered the documentary series Los Montaner, a reality TV show filmed between Miami and Samaná. Produced by NTERTAIN Studios, the series took cameras into the births, tours and family crises of the Montaner family, racking up more than five million hours viewed in its first weeks on the platform.

Re-recordings, Box Office Numbers and Cold Hard Stats

In May 2022, he released Tango, a project recorded at the legendary Ion Studios in Buenos Aires, where he reinterpreted classics such as Cuartito azul and El día que me quieras with a traditional orchestra. With this album he won the Latin Grammy in November of that same year, after receiving the Latin Recording Academy's Musical Excellence Award in 2016.

So the time had come to reclaim his musical legacy.

Following the commercial independence strategy adopted by several Anglo stars, in May 2024 he released Ricardo Montaner (Version 2024), the first of a series of six re-recorded albums meant to reclaim the master rights to his original songs, which had been held for decades by major record labels.

In November 2023, after a concert at the Puerto Plata Amphitheater in the Dominican Republic before five thousand fans, he announced a temporary break from live performances after nearly fifty years of nonstop touring. At that point, his catalog had sold more than 25 million records worldwide and included 65 albums across studio releases, live recordings and official compilations.
