Rishabh Sawhney didn't break into the industry through a stroke of luck at a Bombay café. His entry into Indian cinema was a process of grinding effort and technical observation. For years he worked as a casting assistant at the Casting Bay agency, and that position taught him what directors truly wanted when the lights went down.
Anonymity was his comfort zone.
In 2021, Sawhney landed a supporting role in the ambitious period series The Empire. He played Mehmood, and although the plot's weight rested on other names, the young actor used his screen time to show that his physique was not his only working tool.
But the modeling industry already knew him well. Before making his debut in national fiction, Sawhney had walked the country's top runways, building a work ethic he would later bring to his acting routines.
His big breakthrough came in 2024 with the release of the blockbuster Fighter. Director Siddharth Anand needed an antagonist who could hold his own physically against established stars like Hrithik Roshan.
And the gamble paid off.
Sawhney underwent nine months of strict dieting to build the muscle mass required for the role of Azhar Akhtar. The part demanded an absolute coldness in the eyes, which Sawhney worked on obsessively before stepping onto the set.
The result in 2024 was a cold-blooded villain who avoided the usual histrionics of the action genre. Specialized critics noted that the actor managed to give an unsettling calm to a threat that, in the original script, seemed much flatter.
His 1.88 meters of height and deep voice helped build a presence that didn't need excessive dialogue to create tension in the combat scenes. So his past as a runway model turned out to be a valuable asset for controlling body language under the pressure of IMAX cameras.
Before shooting Fighter, the actor had little experience in big commercial productions, but his technical mindset allowed him to adapt to the demands of a big-budget production.
The risk paid off.
In 2024, Sawhney wrapped his involvement in the film with a contract that included specific availability clauses for possible reshoots of action scenes over an additional six months. His technical profile on the production of Fighter recorded a total of seventy-two sessions of choreographed combat training before filming the final sequence in the desert.
