The magic trick in one continuous shot

In the fall of 2005, Nike uploaded a compressed clip to YouTube, then a fledgling platform, showing a guy juggling the ball off the crossbar four times in a row without letting it touch the grass. That blurry footage passed one million views when almost nobody understood what a digital phenomenon was. It proved that Ronaldinho Gaúcho operated on the visual logic of silent cinema, where the body needs no translation or dialogue to captivate the viewer.

Ronaldo de Assis Moreira was born in Vila Nova, a working-class neighborhood of Porto Alegre, in March 1980. Indoor soccer honed a short, catlike step designed for narrow tiles. In 1998, he debuted with Grêmio, and the experienced defenders looked like extras in a comedy chasing Buster Keaton.

Paris Saint-Germain paid five million euros in 2001 to bring him over from Brazil in a shady deal brokered by agents.

In France, he went through two uneven seasons between nights out and head-on clashes with coach Luis Fernández. But at the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, a single free kick, bent straight into the corner past David Seaman, was enough to secure his move to Europe's elite.

And then Barcelona came calling.

Frenzy at Camp Nou and applause at the Santiago Bernabéu

In July 2003, Joan Laporta presented him to twenty-five thousand fans hungry for spectacle. The Catalan club had endured five years of sporting decline and crushing debt. Ronaldinho lifted the mood of an entire institution with elastic dribbles and a toothy grin that dominated the close-ups on television.

His perfect night came in November 2005. He scored two goals at the Santiago Bernabéu, dribbling past the entire white defense with runs from midfield, and earned a standing ovation from the rival stadium, a rare gesture reserved decades earlier for Diego Armando Maradona. In May 2006, he lifted the European Cup at Saint-Denis against Arsenal to close the most brilliant chapter of his career.

That party lasted exactly as long as his knees held up.

Because physical decline arrived without warning and without brakes. In 2008, Pep Guardiola took charge of the Blaugrana bench and announced his immediate departure to protect the development of Lionel Messi. AC Milan paid twenty-five million euros to squeeze out the last flashes of a player who already ran heavily. He spent two inconsistent seasons at San Siro before returning to Brazil to win the Copa Libertadores with Atlético Mineiro in 2013.

The Asunción Vaudeville and B-Movie Years

After retiring from professional soccer in 2015 following a brief stint in Mexico and Rio de Janeiro, Ronaldinho took on the role of a walking caricature. In 2018, he appeared alongside Mike Tyson and Jean-Claude Van Damme in Kickboxer: Retaliation, a direct-to-video martial arts production in which he played an inmate skilled in acrobatic kicks.

Nobody went to the movies to see that.

In March 2020, Paraguayan police arrested him in Asunción for entering the country with forged passports. He spent thirty-two days in the Specialized Police Unit prison and took part in a prison tournament where the prize for the winning team was a sixteen-kilo suckling pig.

So directors Andrew Douglas and Stuart Douglas had plenty of material to direct Ronaldinho: The Happiest Man in the World, a documentary released on FIFA's official platform in April 2022.

The Brazilian paid, together with his brother, a court bail of 1.6 million dollars to leave Paraguay after five months of detention in a downtown hotel.
