Rosalind Ross didn't start her career on a film set but on horseback at full gallop. Before turning twenty, she was already the most decorated athlete in the history of equestrian vaulting in the United States. She won gold at the World Equestrian Games in 2004, and her name was inducted into the Hall of Fame of her discipline before she decided her true ambition lay in screenwriting.
She left elite sports to study creative writing at Emerson College. She didn't want a gentle transition but a clean break from her athletic past. In 2014 she landed her first professional credit as a screenwriter on the action series Matador. That Robert Rodriguez production taught her how the gears of an industry that shows no mercy for a lack of pace actually turn.
And the change of direction paid off.
During that period in television, Ross learned to write under pressure and to deliver scripts that prioritized structure over ornament. But her real interest was always in redemption stories with a hint of harshness. In 2016 she wrote the script for Lioness, a story about a soldier in Afghanistan that caught the attention of several major studios for its dry, direct approach to war.
The year 2022 marked a technical turning point in her career with the release of Father Stu. Ross not only wrote the screenplay but also took on directing duties for this biographical drama based on the life of Stuart Long. The film follows the transformation of an agnostic boxer into a priest and posed a major production challenge due to its borderline tone, blending black comedy with religious faith.
To get the project off the ground, she had to manage a tight budget and a shoot of just thirty days. She worked with Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson in an environment where improvisation was limited by the schedule. Ross chose a naturalistic aesthetic that avoided excessive visual tricks so the focus stayed on the performances of her actors.
Critics were not unanimous in their reaction to the result.
Despite the divided opinions, the film grossed at the box office three times its initial production budget. Ross proved she could handle top-tier names without the scale of the project overwhelming her. But the industry kept eyeing her personal life out of the corner of its eye because of her relationship with Gibson, something she tried to neutralize by keeping a low profile and focusing exclusively on post-production.
In 2024, her work focused on the development stage of The Lioness, a film about the historical figure Ellen Craft. The project moved away from action cinema into period drama with clear political weight. Ross handled the script adaptation, seeking a balance between documentary rigor and the narrative pace modern audiences expect.
Her style is defined by short dialogue and an economy of resources that reveals her background in high-level competitive sports. There is no room for filler in her scripts. Ross understands that in film, time is the most expensive asset of all. So she prefers to shoot with ironclad scripts that leave no room for doubt during the shooting day.
The film Homestead is scheduled for release in December 2024 through Angel Studios. It is an apocalyptic drama in which Ross once again explores human resilience under extreme conditions. Filming wrapped on a reported budget of $20 million after shooting in locations across Utah.
