Mel Gibson was born in Peekskill, but his destiny was shaped in Sydney. His father moved the family to Australia in 1968 after winning compensation for a work accident. There, a young man with no particular interest in acting ended up enrolled at the National Institute of Dramatic Art thanks to his sister's determination.
He never sought fame, but fame found him.
In 1979, George Miller cast him to star in Mad Max. The director was looking for someone who seemed like an oddball, and Gibson showed up to the casting with a swollen face after a bar fight. He was paid just 15,000 dollars to play Max Rockatansky. The film's success launched a trilogy that put him on the radar of the major American studios.
In 1987, Lethal Weapon arrived. Martin Riggs was not the typical action cop of the eighties, because Gibson gave him an emotional instability that bordered on suicidal. This mix of charisma and physical danger became his personal trademark. The franchise grossed more than 950 million dollars worldwide and gave him full control over his next moves.
In 1993, he decided that acting was not enough and directed The Man Without a Face. It was the dress rehearsal for what came next. Gibson wanted to tell big stories with massive budgets.
In 1995, he convinced Paramount and Fox to finance a three-hour Scottish epic. Braveheart won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Gibson was no longer just a face for action posters. He had become an auteur obsessed with physical sacrifice and the epic of blood.
Absolute power comes with absolute risks.
In 2004, he personally financed The Passion of the Christ. He invested 30 million dollars in a film shot in Aramaic and Latin that no distributor wanted to touch. The movie went on to gross 612 million dollars. But the film's cultural impact also marked the beginning of his rift with the Hollywood industry.
His arrest in Malibu in 2006 shattered his reputation. The insults recorded by police wiped him off the map of major studios for a decade. He took refuge in his production company Icon Productions and in minor roles. The industry has a memory, but the public is curious.
His official forgiveness came in 2016 with Hacksaw Ridge. The story of Desmond Doss allowed him to return to the Oscars as Best Director. Gibson kept his raw, visceral visual style without apologizing for his approach to war cinema. Critics once again embraced his storytelling talent despite his personal past.
In 2024, he worked on the set of the thriller Flight Risk under the direction of Mark Wahlberg. In 2025, he began production on the sequel to his film about Jesus, focused on the resurrection. The script for this project went through six different drafts before finally receiving approval to begin shooting on locations in Malta and Israel.
Production on his films usually employs more than 400 crew members per shoot. The average budget of his behind-the-camera projects exceeds 80 million dollars.
