In 1985 Mary Ellen Trainor entered the collective imagination quietly. She played the mother of the Walsh brothers in The Goonies, and from that moment her presence became a constant in the productions that defined late-20th-century family entertainment. But her path to the screen was not the result of a plan laid out since childhood.
She started her career in radio and television as a producer before making the leap in front of the camera. Trainor understood the industry's inner workings long before audiences recognized her features in the darkness of a movie theater. In 1980 she married Robert Zemeckis, and that professional partnership put her at the center of a style of filmmaking that prioritized pace and intimacy.
She was the invisible glue of an industry at its peak.
Her first film appearance came in 1984 with Romancing the Stone. It was a supporting role, but it helped casting directors notice her ability to play women with authority and a touch of vulnerability. And that is how Richard Donner cast her in a role she would repeat for years.
In 1987 she played Dr. Stephanie Woods for the first time in Lethal Weapon. Her job was to evaluate the mental stability of a suicidal Martin Riggs while trying to keep her composure in a chaotic police station. Trainor reprised the role in the four installments of the franchise released between 1987 and 1998.
No one expected a radio host to end up at the center of the action.
But her work wasn't limited to movies by her husband or close friends. In 1988 she appeared in Die Hard as reporter Gail Wallens. It was a smart choice, since it added a touch of realism to the media coverage of the hostage crisis at Nakatomi Plaza. During those years, she built a niche playing professional women who served as a counterpoint to male action heroes.
She worked under directors such as Richard Donner and Fred Dekker. In 1987 she shot The Monster Squad, and in 1989 she appeared in Ghostbusters II. She didn't seek absolute stardom, because she preferred to be the essential piece that kept the machinery of the script running smoothly. In 1994 she had a small role in Forrest Gump playing the household nanny, but her most memorable scene from that period belongs to Death Becomes Her in 1992.
By the late nineties, her film career began to slow down. Her divorce from Zemeckis in 2000 coincided with a shift in the major Hollywood studios. But Trainor found a solid niche in genre television. Between 1999 and 2002, she played Diane Evans on the series Roswell and appeared in more than twenty episodes of the teen drama.
And the gamble paid off.
Her last big-screen appearance was in 2008 in the film Cake: A Wedding Story. After that project, she chose to step away from the spotlight to focus on her private life and philanthropic causes in California. There were no big retirement announcements or press releases, because she always preferred the discretion that marked her early days in television production.
Mary Ellen Trainor died of complications from pancreatic cancer on May 20, 2015. News of her death became public weeks later through a close friend (Kathleen Kennedy), in an official statement issued on June 8, 2015. She was 62 years old when she died at her residence in Montecito.
