Jack Thibeau wasn't the camera's first choice. Directors were looking for that tough-guy face that has seen too much on the street. In 1979 he stepped into the skin of Clarence Anglin for the shoot of Escape from Alcatraz. His performance was dry and direct.
And the gamble paid off.
It's not easy to share the screen with Clint Eastwood without fading into the background. Thibeau held his own with striking composure. That role as an escaped convict opened the door to an industry that in the 1980s needed action men who looked the part.
In 1984 he took part in a production that changed science fiction films forever. He played Detective Vukovich in The Terminator. His character offered a human, skeptical counterpoint to the chaos unfolding at the precinct. He had no grand speeches, but his physical presence filled the frame.
But his most lasting partnership was with Malpaso Productions. He worked with Eastwood on Sudden Impact in 1983 and returned for City Heat in 1984. Thibeau was the kind of actor who arrived on set fully prepared and caused no trouble.
Because the industry doesn't forgive the passage of time.
By the late 1980s, action films had begun favoring more stylized heroes. In 1987 he had a brief role in Lethal Weapon, and in 1988 he appeared in Action Jackson. These were supporting characters who served a technical function but lacked the depth of his earlier work.
And that's how his career shifted toward television. During the 1990s he appeared in series such as Miami Vice and Seven Days. His range didn't change much. He kept playing the lawman or the tough guy of few words that the script needed to make the scene believable.
Discretion was his personal trademark.
In 2004 he shot his last film under the title The Last Goodbye. After that project, he decided to step away for good from film sets and public events in Los Angeles. He now lives in retirement in California and has not given an interview in the past two decades. His filmography closed with a total of 36 credited roles.
