Eloy de la Iglesia wasn't after technical virtuosity when he put Rosario González Flores in a grimy boarding house in front of a 35-millimeter camera. He wanted a truth that would hurt.
In Colegas (1982), the actress was eighteen years old and shared the frame with Antonio Flores and Enrique San Francisco, all three up to their necks in a harsh story about unemployment, crime and illegal abortions. Rosario didn't land in theaters on the strength of her mother's prestige. She went straight into the underbelly of the quinqui film genre.
That was no drama-school posturing.
During the 1980s, she took on roles in films such as Calé (1987) and Diario de invierno (1988), the latter directed by Francisco Regueiro alongside Fernando Rey. But the directors of the era couldn't quite find a place for her in an industry committed to pleasant comedies or cardboard literary adaptations.
At the start of the nineties, the recording studio took time away from the set. When she released De ley in 1992, with a repertoire written side by side with her brother Antonio, the album sold more than 500,000 copies in Spain.
In 1995, the sudden deaths of Lola Flores and Antonio Flores within just two weeks shook the foundations of Spanish popular music. Rosario turned that shock into a tremendous stage energy that filled entire venues on both sides of the Atlantic.
And the audience response was massive.
Live music gave her control over the tempo of every night, a control that traditional film shoots almost always deny performers with their endless hours of waiting inside the wardrobe truck.
In 2001, she released Muchas flores, an album that won a Latin Grammy Award after surpassing one million copies in the international market.
Pedro Almodóvar took the call when nobody in the film industry was thinking of her for a dense drama. In Talk to Her (2002), the filmmaker entrusted her with Lydia González, a bullfighter scarred by heartbreak who falls into a deep coma after a brutal goring in Aranjuez.
To shoot the bullfighting scenes, the actress spent entire days training with fighting bulls in the Salamanca countryside. So in the close-ups where you see her in the suit of lights, the stiffness of her expression under the montera hat had nothing to do with any editing-room trickery.
But work on set was exhausting because of the surgical precision Almodóvar demanded in the hospital scenes.
The film grossed $51 million at the international box office, and Pedro Almodóvar won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2003. The foreign press praised her on-screen presence, although Rosario chose to slow down and not be swept up by the studios' automatic offers.
In the two decades that followed, her screen appearances were mainly on television, as a coach on musical talent competitions. In 2006, she married Pedro Lazaga, whom she had met while filming Almodóvar, where he worked as first assistant director.
In 2021, she actively took part in the documentary series Lola, analyzing her mother's footage without nostalgic indulgence. Four years later, she appeared in the documentary feature Flores for Antonio (2025), directed by Isaki Lacuesta and Elena Molina and screened out of competition at the San Sebastián Film Festival.
Making this documentary required digitizing more than 80 hours of home recordings on Hi8 and VHS tapes kept by the family itself. A Contracorriente Films released the film in Spanish theaters on November 28, 2025, with just sixty prints in circulation.
