Salvatore Esposito was working at a McDonald's in Naples when he decided his face belonged on a screen. He had no industry contacts and no famous surname to open the doors of the studios in Rome. But he knew his imposing physique and his ability to turn sweetness into threat were tools few actors of his generation handled so naturally.
In 2014 he shaved the sides of his head and put on a leather jacket to play Genny Savastano in Gomorra. That casting changed European television drama because it forced viewers to empathize with a character who was, at heart, a despicable villain. Esposito had to gain nearly twenty kilos to show the physical evolution of a spoiled boy who ends up becoming a political animal within the Camorra system.
And the gamble paid off.
Over the five seasons of the series that ended in 2021, the actor kept his character from turning into a caricature. He achieved this through silences and a restraint in gesture he learned by studying the greats of film noir. Before shooting each scene, he reviewed the script to strip out any unnecessary trace of humanity from his dialogue.
International offers came knocking thanks to that mix of brutality and vulnerability. In 2015, he appeared in Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot, where he showed he could fit into genres that blended realism with urban fantasy. So the leap to Hollywood was only a matter of time and of finding the right project that wouldn't pigeonhole him in Italian mobster roles.
In 2020, he joined the cast of the fourth season of Fargo, playing Gaetano Fadda and sharing scenes with Chris Rock and Jason Schwartzman in a high-level production. It was his first major English-language role, and to nail it he had to work with a voice coach who polished his accent without losing the rough edge the Coen brothers wanted in their productions.
His success outside Italy never made him forget his creative roots.
In 2021 he decided to explore his side as a writer and published his first novel, Lo sciamano. The book dives into psychological thriller territory and shows an obsession with criminal profiles that goes well beyond his work in front of the camera. This venture into literature allowed him to control the narrative from the start, without depending on the decisions of a director or an executive producer.
But film remained his main drive.
In 2022 he starred in Rosanero, a comedy in which a mafia boss swaps bodies with a ten-year-old girl. It was a risky choice aimed at breaking away from the dark image the general public had of him after years of on-screen violence. The film was distributed through digital platforms and reached viewing numbers that confirmed its commercial pull beyond dramatic roles.
In 2024, he took on the challenge of starring in the series Piedone, recapturing the spirit of the films Bud Spencer made famous in the 1970s. Filming took place mainly on real locations in Naples to preserve the visual texture a modern crime drama demands. The production wrapped its shooting schedule with a crew of more than one hundred people and an international distribution plan covering much of Europe and Latin America.
