Sandra Mozarowsky fell from the balcony of her home on Álvarez de Baena Street on August 23, 1977. She was eighteen years old and had already appeared in more than twenty titles in barely five years of professional work. Her untimely death cut short a career that was beginning to move away from fast-paced commercial cinema toward roles with greater dramatic weight.
The daughter of a Russian diplomat and a Spanish mother, she entered the industry almost by accident when she was still a child. In 1969 she made her debut with a brief role in The Other Tree of Guernica under the direction of Pedro Lazaga. That first appearance did not foreshadow that she would become the youngest face of the destape phenomenon during the Spanish Transition.
And Spanish cinema found in her a gold mine.
Her look allowed producers to play with a dangerous ambiguity that mixed childlike innocence with a sensuality forced by the script. In 1975 she took part in The Night of the Seagulls, a horror film directed by Amando de Ossorio that is now considered a cult classic of European fantasy cinema. But most of her contracts required her to undress in dubious comedies where the plot was beside the point.
In 1976 she shot El libro de buen amor II and shortly after La mujer es un buen negocio. She worked at a frenetic pace that barely left her room to choose projects with her own judgment. She shot ten films in just two years, a figure that shows the exploitation young actresses faced in that era of loosened censorship.
The industry typecast her as a young seductress, and she tried to break out of that cycle through training. She took acting classes and began turning down roles that only sought the visual impact of her body. Because Sandra Mozarowsky wanted to be more than an advertising poster on Madrid's Gran Vía.
But the reality of the film offices was different.
In 1977 she starred in Abortion in London, a film directed by Gil Carretero that dealt with a taboo subject in Spain at the time. This work provided a small acting breather before she returned to mass-market productions such as Until Marriage Do Us Part. Her fees went up, but her personal satisfaction with the direction of her career declined with every shoot.
And then came the rumors that were never officially confirmed.
The press of the time began linking her to the upper echelons of power in Spain (including names that censorship still protected zealously). She made an effort to keep her private life away from the spotlight, but media harassment became unbearable during the summer of her death. It was said that she wanted to leave film and move to London to study seriously.
The fall happened from a fourth-floor window.
The official version of events spoke of an accident while she was watering the plants on her terrace, although doubts about a possible suicide or even outside involvement never faded from the public memory. She was in a coma for twenty-two days at the Francisco Franco Health Residence in Madrid. She finally died on September 14, 1977 due to severe brain injuries.
Her death left several projects up in the air and a sense of emptiness among a generation of performers who saw in her a reflection of the country's contradictions. In 2023, director Borja de la Vega released the film The Last Night of Sandra M. to try to reconstruct her final hours from a human perspective, away from sensationalist tabloid gossip.
The film from 2023 was produced by Paciencia y Tenacidad with an estimated budget of seven hundred thousand euros.
