Sevda Ferdağ didn't want to be a passing star. In 1958, she shot Azat Kuşu, and the audience ignored it completely. That first blow was so harsh that she decided to leave for Germany to forget about cameras and makeup.
But her sister Ferda kept insisting, over and over. And in 1963, she returned to Istanbul to try again with a determination that bordered on obsession. That was when director Halit Refiğ gave her a real break in Gurbet Kuşları.
That changed the rules of the game.
From that moment on, her face became a constant presence in the Yeşilçam industry. She made more than 150 films, usually playing strong women who challenged the conservative morals of 1960s Turkey. Because Sevda didn't seek the audience's sympathy, but their complete attention.
Many actors sink when their looks stop being the main driver of their contracts. Not her. During the 1970s, she understood that Turkish cinema was changing and decided her characters had to change with it. In 1976, she took part in Kapıcılar Kralı, one of the most biting and memorable comedies of that period.
The awards soon followed. In 1979, she won the Golden Orange for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Seninle Son Defa. It was recognition of a woman who had stopped being just a pretty face to become the soul of the scene.
There was no turning back.
Unlike other actresses of her generation, Sevda Ferdağ never fully retired. She kept working in television when cinema went through a deep crisis. In 2003, she appeared in the series Gelin, and in 2005 the Antalya Film Festival gave her an honorary award for her entire career.
In her later years, she preferred the quiet of her home in the Cihangir neighborhood. She stayed away from the media spotlight but always stayed connected to the reality of her profession. She died on February 17, 2024 at the age of 81.
She was buried in the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery after a private ceremony at the Teşvikiye Mosque. Medical reports confirmed that she died from complications of a prolonged illness at her home in Istanbul.
