Frank Miller chose a teenager from Burbank to play the young version of Eva Mendes in The Spirit. It was 2008, and Seychelle Gabriel barely understood how a big-budget shoot worked. But that first foray in front of the green screen defined her ability to work in complex digital environments.
The real commercial impact came in 2010 with The Last Airbender. Critics tore M. Night Shyamalan's film apart without mercy. The movie grossed 319 million dollars despite widespread rejection from the specialized press.
Gabriel played Princess Yue, and her white-haired image stayed etched in the memory of fans of the original material. Despite the show's narrative shipwreck, her presence brought a calm that the rest of the cast couldn't convey.
And the industry didn't punish her for the film's creative failure.
In 2011, she joined the cast of Falling Skies to play Lourdes Delgado. Over four seasons, she survived alien invasions produced by Steven Spielberg. This project allowed her to explore a more dramatic and human register, far from the extreme visual effects that dominated her early career.
She alternated between television and dance films in Honey 2 that same year. It was a professional decision to broaden her physical range in a completely different genre. But the milestone that truly changed her relationship with the audience had no real image.
In 2012, she voiced Asami Sato in The Legend of Korra. What started as a supporting character became one of the most talked-about relationships in modern animation history. The series finale in 2014 confirmed the romantic bond between Korra and Asami (a twist that sparked a global debate about representation on screen).
And then animation came to stay on her résumé.
After appearing in the action film Sleight in 2016, she sought projects with more psychological depth. In 2018, she starred in Blood Fest, a horror comedy that parodied the conventions of the genre she had worked in years earlier. It wasn't a box office hit, but it proved she could carry a satirical plot.
In 2021, she joined the cast of The Tomorrow War alongside Chris Pratt. Her role as Sergeant Diaz was brief. But the intensity of the action scenes reinforced her status in high-budget productions that require rigorous physical training.
In 2023, she appeared in season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy as Rosemary. It was a shift toward the more conventional medical drama on ABC. So her career temporarily moved away from fantasy and back down to earth, in more traditional formats.
And then she returned to prestige television.
In 2025, she joins the cast of the second season of The Last of Us as Mel. HBO Max shot much of these scenes in locations in British Columbia over months of extreme weather. Her character is a key surgeon in the revenge plot that drives this new installment of the adapted video game.
The filming contract for this production required full availability for six months in Canada.
