Shakira Mebarak Ripoll signed her first contract with Sony Music Colombia at age thirteen. It was a risky bet by the record label on a girl who was writing her own songs in Barranquilla. But her first two albums, Magia in 1991 and Peligro in 1993, were a commercial disaster that nearly ended her career before it began.
The industry had written her off by the age of seventeen. Sony gave her one last chance, and she insisted on producing her own material to avoid another manufactured flop. She locked herself in to work with a level of freedom few artists her age managed to win in the nineties.
In 1995 she released Pies Descalzos and changed the direction of Spanish-language pop. The album blended electric guitars with introspective lyrics that moved away from the sugary sentimentality typical of the era. It sold more than four million copies worldwide and established her as the voice of a generation that wanted more than romantic ballads.
And the gamble paid off.
Before breaking into the English-speaking market, she set out to solidify her sound in Spanish. In 1998 she worked with Emilio Estefan on the album ¿Dónde están los ladrones?, a project that cost three million dollars, an astronomical figure for a Spanish-language record at the time. The production was dense and sophisticated because she supervised every drum arrangement and every vocal mix.
Her move into English wasn't a matter of translation but of rebuilding her own identity. In 2001 she released Laundry Service after spending months studying the poetry of Walt Whitman to grasp the rhythm of the language. She learned to write in English so she wouldn't have to rely on outside songwriters who didn't understand her style.
Nobody in the industry expected that level of sales.
That album sold thirteen million copies and turned her into a global figure capable of filling stadiums on five continents. But success did not make her complacent. In 2005 she decided to split her artistic output into two volumes, Fijación oral vol. 1 and Oral Fixation vol. 2, where she experimented with emerging reggaetón and alternative rock.
Her ability to grasp the cinematic rhythm of music videos led her to collaborate with top-tier directors. For the visual piece Las de la intuición, filmed in 2007, she used an aesthetic inspired by Helmut Newton's photography. She always understood that the image was a technical extension of musical composition.
Control was total.
In 2010 FIFA chose her to create the anthem for the South Africa World Cup. The track Waka Waka (This Time for Africa) became the most-watched video on YouTube for months. But after that massive peak in popularity came years of recording silence and deep changes in her production and personal management.
Shakira's biography took a turn toward raw honesty in the 2020s. Instead of hiding her personal struggles, she used them as fuel for a string of releases that broke streaming records on digital platforms. Her collaboration with Bizarrap in 2023 drew 63 million views in its first 24 hours.
In 2024 she released the album Las mujeres ya no lloran after seven years without a full-length record. The album worked as a cathartic exercise, blending Mexican regional sounds with the most aggressive electronic pop. It was a commercial survival move executed with surgical precision.
Her time in movies also left its mark on animation. In 2016 she voiced the character Gazelle in Zootopia and co-wrote the film's main theme song. The movie earned more than a billion dollars at the global box office and gave her a hands-on look at professional voice dubbing from a technical perspective.
In 2025, the stadium world tour wrapped its first leg with gross earnings of over 300 million dollars. Staging the show required twenty freight trucks to haul the high-resolution LED screen structure. At the end of the tour, the artist returned home to oversee the editing of a documentary about the studio recording process.
