A six-second homemade video on a dead platform was all it took to launch a multimillion-dollar machine. In 2013, Shawn Mendes was not filling stadiums or lending his voice to Hollywood blockbusters. He was just singing acoustic covers of Justin Bieber in front of a cellphone camera in Pickering, a small town in Ontario.

It exploded within months.

Island Records spotted the opportunity and didn't hesitate to sign him. His first commercial single, Life of the Party, sold more than 100,000 digital copies in twenty-four hours during the summer of 2014. That fact immediately made him the youngest solo artist to land a debut song in the top spots of the Billboard Hot 100.

With Handwritten in 2015, commercial success arrived, along with entry into international radio formats, driven by Stitches. Mendes offered a clean, acoustic alternative to the synthetic production that dominated radio at the time. Guitar in hand and lyrics about heartbreak that sidestepped the usual cynicism of major labels.

The Collapse After the Stadiums

The industry's momentum demands nonstop output. For five years he released three studio albums in a row, world tours with more than a hundred dates, and exhausting media exposure. In 2018 he released his self-titled album Shawn Mendes, a record in which he began candidly sharing his struggles with anxiety.

And eventually, his body presented the bill.

In July 2022, Mendes abruptly canceled all remaining dates on the world tour for his album Wonder. He had completed only seven concerts of a planned run covering dozens of countries and large arenas. He gave up millions of dollars in ticket sales to put himself in the hands of specialists and curb severe mental exhaustion.

A Reptile to Dodge the Spotlight

His first contact with audiovisual fiction had been fairly minor. In 2016 he made a brief appearance in the sci-fi series The 100, a functional cameo meant to test his on-screen appeal. His real leap to major studio film came in 2022 with Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, a musical comedy directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon.

In that adaptation of Bernard Waber's story, he shared credits with Javier Bardem and Constance Wu. Mendes provided the singing voice of the computer-generated lead reptile. Sony Pictures invested 50 million dollars in the budget to blend live action with original songs by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

So the Canadian prepared his work far from conventional film sets. He recorded his tracks in isolated sound booths, without body sensors or motion-capture suits. Because that giant crocodile, unable to speak but gifted at singing, shared exactly his same vulnerability before the public.

Box office barely avoided disaster.

The film grossed 111 million dollars at movie theaters worldwide. That figure covered distribution costs but ruled out any immediate franchise plans on the studio's schedule.

In 2024 he returned to the album format with his fifth studio album, titled Shawn, recorded with producer Mike Sabath. The record ran twelve acoustic songs, recorded with basic analog gear and tape microphones in a cabin in Washington.

His first single, "Life of the Party," was released while he was still a minor and debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, an especially unusual achievement for an artist without a published album.
In 2015, he contributed to the soundtrack of the movie "Descendants" with the song "Believe."
He recorded two collaborations with Camila Cabello several years apart: "I Know What You Did Last Summer," released in 2015, and "Señorita," which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2019.
In 2016, he explained in an interview with BBC Radio 1 that he started writing the first track of "Illuminate" the day after releasing his debut album "Handwritten."
In 2021, he was announced as executive producer of the TV adaptation of the video game "Life Is Strange," through his production company Permanent Content.
He has collaborated with Canadian brands such as Tim Hortons and Roots Canada, and in 2023 he appeared alongside Scarlett Johansson in a David Yurman campaign.
The album "Shawn" was written and recorded over two years in several locations, including Costa Rica, New York, Washington and Nashville, and Mendes also co-produced it.

  • For me it’s hurtful. I get mad when people assume things about me because I imagine the people who don’t have the support system I have and how that must affect them.
