Simon Cowell started out in the EMI mailroom because his father knew the company's executives. He had no artistic ambitions or big plans on the horizon. He was just a British twentysomething with no university degree, sorting packages, serving coffee and listening to demo tapes that executives tossed in the trash.
In the late eighties, he set up his own independent label, Fanfare Records. He sold pop records by Sinitta, released recordings by the Power Rangers and produced official albums with WWF American wrestling stars. That mix of opportunism and mass consumer culture defined his commercial instincts: musical quality mattered far less than packaging a product that could sell to millions of families.
The business went bankrupt in 1989.
At thirty, he had to move back into his parents' home with accumulated debts of more than half a million pounds. Rather than change careers, he joined the record label BMG as head of repertoire and convinced two actors from a British TV series to record a version of a 1950s classic. The Robson & Jerome record sold nearly two million copies in just a few weeks.
In 2001, Pop Idol arrived on British television with Simon Fuller as executive producer. Cowell took his seat at the judges' table in tight dark T-shirts and with a cutting tone that TV at the time rarely allowed. The press called him a sadist, while audiences devoured his razor-sharp put-downs.
His move to the United States with American Idol in 2002 sent the business numbers soaring. Cowell understood before anyone else that the heart of the show wasn't the contestant who sang well, but the judge who crushed the dreams of those who sang badly, live on air. Fox reportedly paid him thirty-six million dollars per season to hold the broadcasts together with tense silences and disapproving looks.
But the real payoff wasn't a huge salary for appearing on screen. The key was holding on to the broadcast rights to the show and control over the winners' record deals.
And that's how Syco was born.
He launched The X Factor in 2004 to go head-to-head with Fuller, and three years later he created Got Talent, a variety format that was eventually franchised in more than sixty territories. Those productions gave us names like Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle, whose album sales helped fund the expansion of his production company in London and Los Angeles.
In 2010, he put together One Direction by pulling five boys who had been cut from the solo auditions on The X Factor. The group brought in hundreds of millions of dollars through worldwide tours and catalog sales before disbanding five years later.
In 2020, Cowell bought the entire rights to Syco Entertainment from Sony Music to regain full control over his television shows. That same summer, he broke his back while testing an electric bike at his home in California, which required six hours of surgery and a long medical leave away from the sets.
Live prime-time shows steadily lost viewers to on-demand video platforms and social media. Keeping up huge technical productions on traditional television stopped being profitable for broadcasters on both sides of the Atlantic.
In 2024, he signed a deal with Netflix to produce a documentary series about the search for a new youth band in the UK, without the weekly phone voting from viewers. The shoot was run on half the usual budget that traditional talent competitions required when staged in indoor theaters.

Things you probably didn't know about Simon Cowell
Very simple. I'm putting up the money, and I also have ears.
The host is pathetic! The show is pathetic! The audience is pathetic!
You know Paula, who I couldn't look at the beginning of the series... I love her to death now. I hate to admit it but I do.
Sinitta and Jackie are my family now. I don't think of them as ex-girlfriends anymore. They are an extension of my life... It must be infuriating, but I'd never change because my ex-girlfriends are so close I couldn't imagine life without them.
If I tape an 11-hour day, guess which parts end up on air. Not the bits when I'm pleasant, but the parts when I'm obnoxious.
