Stephanie Courtney was born in 1970 in New York State. She earned a degree in English from Binghamton University and soon after decided to move to the big city to study acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse. There, she learned that comedy demands an almost military discipline.
In 1990, she moved to Los Angeles with her sister Jennifer to try to make a name for herself in the industry. They shared a small apartment and worked temp jobs while looking for auditions. Competition was fierce, but she had a real edge in the world of sketch comedy.
She joined the The Groundlings company, where she met Scott Kolanach. He was the theater's lighting director, and they ended up getting married in 2008. That stint in improv theater was key to sharpening her direct style and her quick on-camera reactions.
And persistence finally paid off.
In 2008, Courtney's luck changed dramatically when she auditioned for the insurance company Progressive. The Flo character was not designed to last for decades. But audience reaction was so positive that the company decided to build its entire marketing strategy around her face.
Stephanie Courtney is reportedly paid 2 million dollars a year for this role. That figure places her among the best-paid commercial actors in the history of American television. The contract includes exclusivity clauses that limit her appearances in other commercial campaigns.
Despite her massive fame from commercials, she never abandoned traditional scripted television. She appeared in acclaimed series such as Mad Men, playing Marge in five episodes during 2007. She also took part in The United States of Tara and voiced characters in Tom Goes to the Mayor.
The wig and white uniform are her work outfit.
Her film credits include The Heartbreak Kid from 2007, where she shared scenes with Ben Stiller. In that production, she played Gayla and showed she could keep up the pace of a big-budget comedy. Still, her natural habitat has always been short-form and episodic television.
In 2018, she joined the cast of The Goldbergs as Essie Karp. It's a recurring role that lets her keep her profile as a character actress without giving up her commercial work. In 2023, she took part in the voice cast of the animated series Mulligan, produced by Netflix.
One of her most recent projects was the movie Unfrosted from 2024, directed by Jerry Seinfeld. The film tells the story of how Pop-Tarts were created in the 1960s, and she plays one of the supporting characters in the corporate setting. Filming took place on location in California during the spring of 2022.
Unfrosted had a budget of 40 million dollars and was released directly on digital platforms.
