In 1971, Stevland Hardaway Judkins turned twenty-one and stood up to Berry Gordy in the Detroit offices with a blunt demand: absolute creative control or he walks. The Motown boss had on the table a contract renewal offer for twenty-one million dollars, an astronomical sum for any Black musician in the United States.
But money was secondary to his real goal. He wanted the keys to the recording studio and the rights to his master tapes.
No one had ever twisted Gordy's arm like that.
Wonder didn't compose by reading conventional sheet music but by building walls of sound in his head. With the technical help of Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff, he tamed TONTO, a massive network of interconnected modular analog synthesizers that filled an entire room. Those circuits produced low frequencies unheard of on the radio, replacing traditional wind sections with polyphonic layers on albums like Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life.
And when commercial radio stations asked for more danceable tunes, he decided to lock himself away to write the score for a documentary about plants.
In 1979 he composed the score for The Secret Life of Plants, a film directed by Walon Green about the sensitivity of plants, where Wonder had his assistant describe every shot to him, down to the millimeter, through his earpiece. It was one of the first record productions to use digital multitrack recording technology, a technical decision that sent Motown's budgets soaring. Critics considered the work an incomprehensible excess, and record stores struggled to sell a nearly instrumental double vinyl.
Hollywood came knocking when Gene Wilder commissioned him to score the comedy The Woman in Red in 1984. Wonder took on the project by combining digital keyboards with a catchy ballad that broke all the rules of international airplay. The song I Just Called to Say I Love You topped the charts in nineteen countries and won him the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1985, beating out the nomination of Phil Collins.
When accepting the golden statuette at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, he dedicated the award to imprisoned activist Nelson Mandela.
So the government of Pretoria's racist regime immediately reacted by banning all of his music from state radio stations in South Africa. That standoff with international censorship showed that his songs were not simply fast-consumption products. Years later, in 1991, he returned to film studios with the soundtrack for Jungle Fever, Spike Lee's film in which he captured the social divide in Harlem through aggressive rhythmic programming.
The film industry never managed to tame his ear.
But the true myth of his sessions remains hidden in the vaults of Wonderland Studios.
In 2020 he ended nearly sixty years of association with Motown to manage his rights through his own company. In August 2024 he released the single Can We Fix Our Nation's Broken Heart, an acoustic take recorded in California in which he dropped electronic devices and let the melodic weight rest on wooden guitars alongside his Hohner 270 chromatic harmonica.
At the technical peak of 1976, the sound engineers recorded sessions lasting forty-eight hours straight with no rest breaks. Stevie played the acoustic drums, the synthesized bass and the electric pianos track by track, scrapping entire takes at the slightest tempo drift. That obsessive pursuit of precision consumed three hundred reels of Ampex 456 analog tape, stored in fireproof vaults with permanent climate control at twelve degrees Celsius.

Things you probably didn't know about Stevie Wonder
We all have ability. The difference is how we use it.
Baby, everything is alright,Uptight, outta sight!
But, very well, I believe I know you very well,Wish that you knew me too, very well,And I think I can deal with everything going through your head.
You are the sunshine of my life,That's why I'll always be around,You are the apple of my eye,Forever you'll stay in my heart.
But what I'd like to know,Is could a place like thisExist so beautiful?Or do we have to find our wings and fly awayTo the visions in our mind?
'Where is your God?'That's what my friends ask me,And I say it's taken him so long'Cause we've got so far to come.
