Travis Scott

Jacques Webster quickly realized that sound without image is incomplete. He grew up in Missouri City, a residential area on the outskirts of Houston, where he spent summer afternoons locked in a room full of analog synthesizers and rented VHS movies. His grandfather played jazz and his father was a drummer. From them he inherited an obsession with percussion, but his ambition aimed far higher than the local Texas circuit.

After dropping out of the University of Texas at San Antonio at nineteen, he lied to his parents to move to New York and then to Los Angeles. He slept on borrowed couches while sending instrumental demos to dozens of record labels.

Nobody answered the phone.

The big screen inside the studio

Scott never saw his demos as simple audio tracks. He conceived every album with the visual scale of a sci-fi feature film, structured in acts and with orchestral transitions designed for art directors. His official debut album, Rodeo, hit stores in 2015 with a cover showing his own body transformed into a plastic action figure.

That sculptural approach to rap reached its boiling point in 2018 with Astroworld. Scott dedicated the title to an amusement park that was demolished during his childhood and built a massive marketing campaign around the album.

In that project, the songs functioned as long takes saturated with psychedelic synthesizers and unpredictable tempo changes.

Commercial success led to a direct alliance with the film industry. Christopher Nolan personally called him in 2020 to compose the main theme for his film Tenet. Nolan described Scott's voice as the final piece that tied together the film's temporal puzzle, and the resulting song, titled The Plan, explored vocal distortions processed through analog tube compressors.

In August 2021, he announced a production deal with film distributor A24 under his Cactus Jack Films label.

The catastrophe and the final edit

On November 5, 2021, the crowd surge at his music festival in Houston killed ten people and injured hundreds. The tragedy led to hundreds of lawsuits, the temporary cancellation of million-dollar contracts and a media silence that lasted months. The Houston Police Department closed the criminal investigation in 2023 without criminal charges against the musician, although the civil cases were settled with confidential financial agreements outside the courtroom.

The comeback demanded a bigger scale.

In July 2023, he released his fourth studio album, Utopia, accompanied by the theatrical premiere of Circus Maximus. It wasn't a long music video but an anthology film of 75 minutes shot on 35mm, which Scott co-directed alongside filmmakers such as Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Winding Refn, Valdimar Jóhannsson and Harmony Korine.

The scenes shot among the Roman ruins of Pompeii echoed Korine's raw aesthetic and Noé's strobe lighting. The album debuted at number one, selling 496,000 copies in its first week in the United States, driven by physical distribution that included exclusive vinyl and movie screenings that sold out within minutes.

In 2024, he re-released his early demo Days Before Rodeo on digital platforms to celebrate its tenth anniversary and sold 361,000 units in just seven days. The final mix kept the original unremastered tracks, with their background noise and midrange frequencies saturated at 24 bits.
