At age six, Vanesa Martín held a Spanish guitar almost bigger than her own torso. Her father taught her the first chords in the Malaga neighborhood of El Palo, and she learned to listen before she learned to speak. Before stepping onto a television set or filling large venues, she studied Teaching and Pedagogy at the University of Málaga at her family's insistence. But the classroom felt too small for her.
In 2003, she packed her bags and took a train to Madrid with no connections in the music industry. For months she performed during the acoustic nights at the bar El Taburete and at El Búho Real, sharing the mic with other songwriters hungry for attention. Carlos Jean heard her at a tiny concert and took on producing her debut studio album, Agua, released in 2006.
Nobody handed him anything.
That first album sold poorly. The label EMI failed to get radio airplay for a project that blended Andalusian roots with restrained pop arrangements. So Martín terminated her contract and in 2009 signed with Warner Music to record Trampas in Milan with producer Bob Benozzo. She managed to enter the country's official best-seller chart with almost no support from mainstream radio formats.
Commercial pop often falls into easy hooks and textbook melodic resolutions. Martín built a narrative style in which every verse works like a film sequence, with uncomfortable silences and sharp dialogue. In Spanish audiovisual work, every second of footage demands real dramatic tension, and she wrote songs with images already in her head.
In 2015, director Paula Ortiz cast her in the feature film La novia. For that adaptation of Lorca's work, Martín recorded a stripped-down version of Dice la nostra novia, a traditional Sephardic song woven into the wedding banquet scene. She sustained the tragic mood of the film's climax with just breath and strings, forgoing any vocal embellishment.
That performance caught the attention of on-demand streaming platforms. In 2017, Netflix commissioned her to compose the main theme for the series Cable Girls. The resulting song, Hablarán de ti y de mí, served as the soundtrack of the company's first scripted production in Spain. Four years later, director Vicente Villanueva asked her for the central theme of the comedy Sevillanas de Brooklyn, for which she wrote Paso a dos.
The film industry sought her out for her ability to resolve a conflict in three minutes.
In 2016, Martín moved to Los Angeles to record under Eric Rosse, a frequent collaborator of Anglo-American artists. The aim was to escape the standardized digital treatment of Spanish music and pursue a dry, acoustic punch. The result was Munay, a project that surpassed the 80,000 physical copies sold in a market in the midst of a steep collapse in album sales.
She took the technical reins of her work. On Todas las mujeres que habitan en mí, released in 2018, she took direct charge of the music coproduction, deciding on microphone setup and mix layouts with producer Tony Romero. In 2020 she released Siete veces sí, and in 2022 she delivered Placeres y pecados, an album mastered with external analog processors on half-inch tape.
In June 2024, she closed her chapter with Warner Music and signed an international contract with Universal Music Spain. The legal document signed in Miami set a production advance for two studio albums, with a mandatory delivery of twenty-four original compositions under the supervision of her own sound engineers.
