The Astronomy Club meets to hear from its president, Professor Barbenfouillis, who proposes an expedition to the Moon. Some members are reluctant, but five bold astronomers end up joining the project: Nostradamus, Alcofrisbas, Omega, Micromegas and Parafaragaramus. The group gets to work. A glass-roofed workshop shapes a bullet-shaped capsule, while a huge cannon capable of launching it into space is built. Directed by Georges Méliès, who also plays Professor Barbenfouillis, the film follows this team from the meeting room to the moment everything is ready for launch.

Trivia about A Trip to the Moon

Shooting the film cost 10,000 francs and took three months to complete, unusually high figures within Méliès's filmography.

Widespread piracy prevented Méliès from receiving most of the profits from a film that was very successful.

The color prints were hand-painted in the laboratory of Élisabeth and Berthe Thuillier, who ran a studio of two hundred women.

In 1903, English composer Ezra Read published a piano piece titled A Trip to the Moon, which follows the film scene by scene.

To simulate the camera moving closer to the Moon, Méliès placed the actor in a pulley chair on a rail ramp and dragged him toward the camera.

The Selenite costumes, in particular, were made from cardboard and cloth, and their cost was one of the highest expenses of the production.

A hand-colored copy was discovered in 1993 in Barcelona; its restoration culminated in a screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011, 109 years after the original presentation.

The Selenites were played by acrobats from the Folies Bergère, while dancers from the Théâtre du Châtelet played the stars and rocket assistants.
