Michel is an impulsive young criminal who idolizes the gangsters of American cinema. He has just stolen a car in Marseille and heads for Paris with a clear goal: to collect money he is owed and to see Patricia again, an American student he recently dated. During the drive, the traffic police begin to track him, and the escape becomes the first test for a man who lives outside the law. Jean-Luc Godard directs the film, the role of Michel goes to Jean-Paul Belmondo, while Jean Seberg plays Patricia. Michel wants to reach the capital as soon as possible, before the police catch up with him.

Trivia about Breathless

Jean Seberg agreed to take part for $15,000 in June 1959, one-sixth of the film's budget.

Filming lasted 23 days, from August 17 to September 12, 1959, and included a visit by President Eisenhower to Paris, which Godard used as a backdrop.

Instead of renting a dolly, Godard often pushed Coutard in a wheelchair to shoot the scenes.

It premiered in a chain of four commercial theaters, not an art-house cinema, and sold 259,046 tickets in four weeks.

Nearly the entire film had to be dubbed in post-production because the Cameflex was noisy and could not sync the sound.

The story is loosely based on a newspaper article Truffaut read about Michel Portail and his American journalist girlfriend.

The film won the Prix Jean Vigo in 1960, and Jean-Luc Godard took the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival that same year.

StudioCanal restored the film in 4K from the original negatives, shot on Gevaert Belgium and Ilford Pancromatic emulsions, and released that version on Ultra HD, Blu-ray, DVD, and digital in November 2020.
