The film that shocked critics... uncut, uncensored, so everyone can see it!

Marcello Rubini is a Roman journalist working for a sensationalist tabloid, tired of the life he leads. A helicopter carries a statue of Christ over an ancient aqueduct on the outskirts of Rome, and Marcello's news helicopter follows it toward the city center. Distracted by a group of women in bikinis sunbathing on a rooftop, Marcello tries to get their phone numbers by making gestures from the air, but fails. His job requires him to chase celebrities and news stories through the streets of Rome, where he is always surrounded by all kinds of characters, especially the elite of Italian society. Directed by Federico Fellini, the film follows his search for pleasure and recognition, with Marcello Mastroianni in the lead role.

Trivia about La Dolce Vita

To shoot the Trevi Fountain scene, Fellini had to wait for Mastroianni to drink a bottle of vodka until he was completely drunk.
The name of the character Paparazzo was taken by Ennio Flaiano, co-writer and creator of the character, from a novel by George Gissing, as Flaiano himself recounts.
The producer wanted Paul Newman for the lead role, but Fellini considered him too handsome and chose Mastroianni, whom he described as the face of the ordinary.
The film drew 13,617,148 viewers in Italy and 2,956,094 in France, making it the second most-watched Italian film, behind only War and Peace.

Quotes by La Dolce Vita

  • [to Sylvia] You are everything... everything! You are the first woman on the first day of creation. You are mother, sister, lover, friend, angel, devil, earth, home.
  • We must get beyond passions, like a great work of art. In such miraculous harmony. We should love each other outside of time... detached.
  • [to Paparazzo] How can you be this way? It's not possible to be like you! Hyenas! You're worse than hyenas! You don't respect anyone! You make me sick! Cowards!
  • [to Marcello] Stay free, available, like me. Never get married. Never choose. Even in love, it's better to be chosen.
  • Le tre grandi evasioni -- fume, bere, letto. [The three great escapes—smoking, drinking, bed.]
  • Transvestite: By 1965 there'll be total depravity. How squalid everything will be.
