Eli is 12 years old. She has been 12 for more than 200 years, and she has just moved next door.

Oskar is twelve, shy, and lives with his mother, who is separated from her husband, in Blackeberg, a suburb of Stockholm in the early 1980s. At school he suffers daily abuse and beatings from his classmates, and never fights back. At night, in the courtyard of his apartment building, he imagines his revenge and pretends to commit murders with a knife. One day he meets Eli, a girl who seems to be his age and who sparks a curiosity in him that he can't quite explain. The film is directed by Tomas Alfredson, and Kåre Hedebrant plays Oskar.

Trivia about Let the Right One In

The playground structure where much of the relationship between Oskar and Eli unfolds was built specifically for the film, designed with the CinemaScope format in mind.

Lina Leandersson answered an online ad seeking a boy or girl aged 12 who was "good at running." After three more auditions, she was chosen to play Eli.

During post-production, Alfredson discovered that the sound effects and music made the scene "too American, in a bad way," so they had to be removed for it to work.

To mimic the sound of Eli biting her victims and drinking their blood, Elif Ceylan was recorded eating melon or sausage, and those recordings were mixed with animal noises.

The casting process for the leads lasted a year and included open auditions in several cities across Sweden; Kåre Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson were ultimately chosen.

The film won the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, as well as the Nordic Film Prize at the Gothenburg Film Festival.

The production had an approximate budget of 29 million Swedish kronor and grossed $11,227,336 worldwide, according to data compiled for the film.

Hammer Films and Spitfire Pictures acquired the rights to an American adaptation, released in 2010 with Matt Reeves directing.
