M – A City Searches for a Murderer

In Berlin, a group of girls plays an elimination game in the courtyard of an apartment block. As they sing a macabre rhyme about a child murderer, in another apartment Mrs. Beckmann sets the table for lunch and waits for her daughter Elsie to come home from school. A wanted poster warns of a serial killer stalking little children, and parents anxiously wait at the school gates. At first, the man's face is not shown. He is recognized by his shadow, his silhouette and a whistled tune. He is Hans Beckert, played by Peter Lorre, and the whole city lives in fear of him. The film is directed by Fritz Lang.

Trivia about M

The whistled melody from Peer Gynt that signals the killer is not performed by Peter Lorre, but by Thea von Harbou, the film's co-writer and Lang's wife.
Lang used several real criminals as extras, and during filming 25 cast members were arrested.
The Staaken studios denied Lang space because its director was a member of the Nazi Party, which suspected the film portrayed the Nazis until it learned the plot.
The office building robbery in the film was inspired by a real 1929 heist at the Disconto Bank in Berlin, carried out by the Sass brothers' gang.

Quotes by M

  • We're doing our job because we have a living to make. But this monster has no right to live. He must disappear. He must be exterminated, without pity… without scruples.
  • Girl in Circle: Just you wait, it won't be long, The man in black will soon be here, With his cleaver's blade so true, He'll make mincemeat out of you!
  • [to Hans Beckert] You talk of rights… You will get your rights. We are all law experts here, from six weeks in Tegel, to fifteen years in Brandenburg.
  • Pickpocket with Seven Watches: There are more police on the street tonight than whores.
  • Tillie: Don't do that!
  • Children: [singing] Just you wait a little while, the nasty man in black will come. With his little chopper, he will chop you up!
